Adams State High Altitude Training Center

A Message from High Altitude Training Center Coordinator Zoila Gomez

Thinking of what I have done in the past as an athlete, I know I was never afraid to go the distance to reach my athletic and professional goals.  With the support, guidance, and believe of mentors and Coaches like Damon Martin and Coach Vigil, I have had the privilege to represent the United States in the past three world Championships in the marathon.  Being part of the best team in the world, Team USA and dining with the best track and field athletes of the world has been an experience of a life time.

Moving to Alamosa 12 years ago to start training at altitude was the best decision I have ever made to date.  In no time, my times improved drastically and by the end of my college career I earned 6 national individual titles and 11 all American honors.

As a professional athlete my biggest accomplishment has been my 4th place finish at the 2008 USA Women's Marathon Olympic Trials. I consider myself one of the most fortunate athletes in the world as I have been able to live and train at altitude the past 12 years.  Alamosa is indeed one of the best altitude training sites in the nation.

Many professional athletes like Leo Manzano, Kara Goucher, Nick Symmonds, Chris Solinsky, Bernard Lagat, Shalane Flanagan, Lopez Lomong just to name a few train at altitude for six to twelve weeks and then return to sea level for their competitive seasons.

More and more professional athletes are seeing the benefits of this type of training and seeking out environments that will provide an excellent High Altitude experience.  While there are numerous high altitude training centers in the US and around the world, these resources have only been open to the elite distance runner.

I am pleased to welcome you  to the 2013 High Altitude Training Center in Alamosa, Colorado.  This is a unique opportunity geared towards college students who want to learn and train at an altitude of 7,544ft for the months of June and July. This learning experience coupled with training at high altitude will improve your likelihood of success in your upcoming cross country and track seasons.

Adams State University  has developed a high altitude training class as a part of their HPPE (Human Performance and Physical Education) program and has employed Coach Damon Martin to teach the class.  They have included guest speakers such as internationally renowned Dr Joe I. Vigil, the 2004 Olympic coach to be guest lecturers.  The class will go into detail about the physiology of altitude training and how to best train at altitude.

Along with taking this class, students will be able to live in the on- campus apartments and have access to all of the facilities that Adams State has to offer.   The mission of this program is to give collegiate level student -athletes the opportunity to learn about high altitude training and to experience it first-hand.  There is no other program like this in the country and I highly encourage all who are interested, to take advantage of this unique opportunity and go the distance.
