The 1962 football team was one of Adams State’s best finishing the season with a solid 9-1 overall record. Adams State would cap off the season with a thrilling 23-20 victory over Northern Illinois in the Mineral Water Bowl under head coach and Adams State Hall of Famer Darrell Mudra. Trailing 20-0 at halftime, Adams State shut out Northern Illinois in the second half while scoring 23 points in the process. ASC was led by quarterback Bobby Hidalgo, who actually won the job when original starter David Ochoa was injured in practice. David would then become the kicker for Adams State booting several key field goals throughout the year including the lone score in a 3-0 win that sent ASC to the Mineral Water Bowl. Darrell Mudra coached the 1962 team from the press box , an unconventional style as most coaches coach from the sideline. This meant that the ‘62 team took a lot of ownership in their team, something Coach Mudra noted was significant in the team’s success. In fact, he gave players the power to name their own plays and gave the quarterback significant authority in calling plays from the line of scrimmage.
Coach Mudra credited President Fred Plachy as a big part of the team’s success, along with his assistant coaches and ASC staff.
