Chuck Schwartz ran to a 3000 meter steeplechase title during the 1988 outdoor track & field campaign. With his winning time of 8:56.19, he became the first Adams State student-athlete to win a title in the steeplechase event. As of 2016, he holds the Azusa Pacific University stadium record (8:55.19) in the 3000 meter steeplechase. He was also a cross country All-American in 1988 by virtue of his 24th place finish. His placing helped Adams State secure the NAIA Cross Country national title. His efforts in the classroom landed him a spot as a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 1988 for the outdoor track and field season.
