Head coach Gene Moses led the 1972 Adams State wrestling team to a NAIA National Championship in Klamath Falls, Ore. (hosted by Oregon Institute of Technology). It marked the third wrestling national championship in program history and the first with Moses at the helm. Adams State garnered 64 points and defeated second-place finisher, University of Nebraska-Omaha, who tallied 53.5 points. With this team accomplishment, Moses was named the NAIA Wrestling Coach of the Year. While with Adams, he was also a two-time NAIA District Coach of the Year.
