From 1976-79, Brown roamed the Adams State sideline as the program's linebacker and defensive line coach. From there he spent time coaching at Southwest Texas State (1980-82), Texas Christian University (1983-91), Minnesota (1992-95), Duke (1996-2007), Colorado State University (2008-10), and Arizona State University (2011).

Most recently Brown worked with the San Francisco 49ers as a regional scout (2012-14) and defensive line coach (2015). His extensive coaching background led him to a pair of NCAA Division II Championships while at Southwest Texas. He has also coached various NFL draft picks and free agent signees.

The Del Norte, Colorado, native was an All-American football player for Del Norte High School during the 1960's. His play on the field led to his induction into the Del Norte High School Hall of Fame.
