GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (November 2, 2014) — The Adams State University women's soccer team concluded the season on a high note, beating the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in overtime by a 2-1 margin on Sunday afternoon. With their third road win, Adams State wraps up the 2014 campaign with a 5-10-3, 4-7-3 in RMAC contests.
Despite winning both their season finale and going 4-1-1 in their last six games, the Grizzlies will not participate in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament. Colorado State University-Pueblo clinched the sixth, and final, spot with their win today over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs via a 4-0 drubbing of the Mountain Lions.
The Grizzlies played with grit this afternoon as it was a come-from-behind win against a squad looking for momentum heading into next year. No goals were scored in the first half of the match; however ASU did have four shots on goal in the first half. The scoring started at 52:25 when CMU striker Darion Wiegert scored her second goal of the season from a header off an assist from Jessie Para. Five minutes later, the Mavericks took another shot on goal, however freshman goalkeeper Mollie O'Connor blocked the shot to keep within reasonable striking distance of CMU. O'Connor on the day had three saves to one goal allowed.
With less than 10 minutes left in regulation Adams State found offensive rhythm as
Jenezza Sandoval came through with the equalizer at 81:22. Regulation ended with a 1-1 score and overtime was needed to determine the victor. In the first minute of overtime
Dezirae Armijo was able to sneak a pass through the Maverick defense that found
Karen Toro for the game winning goal. Toro's shot ricocheted off the left post and found its way past the Maverick goalkeeper; ending the game immediately.
For the season, ASU went 2-3-2 at home and as previously mentioned compiled an impressive 4-1-1 record during their final six matches. The Grizzlies graduate 12 seniors including
Alex Sanderson and her team-best five goals.
