(January 6, 2015) – For the first time in over a month the Adams State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams returned to the pool as they hosted the Colorado School of Mines on Jan. 5. With a 116-86 win, the ASU women improve to 5-0 during dual meets. They also improve to 4-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) duals. Meanwhile the men were defeated by the Orediggers, 115-84, and see their overall record go to 1-1 and 0-1 in conference play.
It was a big day for sophomore
Marissa Mantzey who set a pair of new pool records at ASU. Mantzey posted a first place time of 25.02 in the 50 yard freestyle for a total of nine team points. She later touched the wall for first in 1:00.64 during the 100 yard backstroke. She carried splits of 29.88 and 30.76 to beat teammate
Erica Norton who finished in 1:02.18. Norton would go on to claim first in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:01.34.
Also playing a big role in the win was
Melissa Lopez. The sophomore was victorious in both the 500 yard freestyle and the 1000 yard freestyle. Her time of 5:30.47 during the 500 yard freestyle was just three seconds off the pool record set by Alison Bischoff on 11/10/12.
The ASU women would also sweep both relay events with wins in the 200 yard medley (1:51.75) and 400 yard freestyle (3:46.21).
Benjamin Laxson and
Alan Jackman paced the ASU men during their events. Laxson took home first in the 200 yard IM (2:06.71) and 100 yard breaststroke (59.90). He was just .06 seconds off the mark of tying his pool record in the 100 yard breaststroke which he set back on 11/2/13. Jackman pulled through with a finals time of 55.25 during the 100 yard butterfly for first place and nine team points.

Clayton Denney and
Derick Goodson performed together in the 200 yard medley relay to narrowly edge out Mines for first place. Together the group tallied a time of 1:40.15 as the Orediggers touched the wall in 1:40.63.
The ASU women are back in the pool on Jan. 10 when they compete against Western State Colorado University in Gunnison. That dual is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time. The ASU men host Colorado Mesa University on Jan. 17 at 12:00 p.m. in the final home event of the season.
