DENVER-Despite holding a late lead in the second game of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at Regis University, the Adams State University Grizzlies could not capture their first wins of the season as Regis swept the doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 5-4.
In the opening game, Adams State allowed the Rangers to score an unearned run in the the bottom of the second inning before a triple in the bottom of the third scored two runs and then a 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth gave them a 5-0 lead.
Adams State scored their only run of the opening game in the top of the fifth when
Tyler Hays singled up the middle to score
Kalin Johnson.
The Grizzlies had four base hits in the game including a double by
April Riggins while surrendering seven hits. All the hits were allowed by
Lauren Murphy, who falls to 0-4 on the season, while giving up four earned runs and three walks. She had three strikeouts during her 3.2 innings of work.
Whitney Fields pitched 2.1 innings of work and didn't allow a hit but walked three walks.
In the second game, Adams State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Gabrielle Griego drew a bases-loaded walk to score Hays before Feilds hit a 2-run double to left center scoring Griego and Riggins.
The Rangers rallied back with a run in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at three before Griego had a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to score Hays an d give ASU a narrow 4-3 lead.
The Rangers then had a double in the seventh to tie the game before they had a walk-off wild pitch that allowed Breanna Pearsall to score the game-winning run.
Adams State had nine hits with doubles from Hays and Fields while surrendering eight. Fields pitched six inning and gave up five earned runs while
Taylor Roberts was credited with her third loss of the season after facing just one batter.
Adams State closes out the four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
