PHOENIX (February 4, 2017) – Nine runs by Benedictine University at Mesa proved to be the downfall for Adams State University in the 4-Him Tournament Championship. The Redhawks' (6-4) crooked number in the fifth resulted in an 11-2 defeat for the Grizzlies (2-2).
Despite the loss, Adams State owned an early 1-0 lead thanks to a RBI single from
Derek Denovellis in the first. Denovellis' two-out RBI scored
Michael Downs who reached base on a throwing error to begin the game.
The Redhawks brought a run across home plate in the bottom of the third but the Grizzlies answered with a go-ahead run in the top of the fourth.
Patrick Huffaker reached base with a double to left center and crossed home plate on a
Nick Hill RBI sacrifice fly.
The 2-1 lead vanished in the next half inning as Benedictine hit a solo home run to left field.
In Benedictine's nine-run fifth, the Redhawks sent 16 batters to the plate resulting in nine runs off five hits. Grizzly starting pitcher
Casey Weber was pulled at the start of the frame for
Chance Ward but the junior was unable to get out of the inning as
Beau Lofink,
Adam Molina, and
Ty Gavin also spent time on the mound during the fifth.
Moving forward the Grizzlies were unable to place a runner on base; ultimately finishing the game with three hits.
Adams State begins a four-game series at Lubbock Christian University on Feb. 9
