ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 23, 2017) –
Dylan April and
Ryne Niemi posted back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning but it came in a losing effort as Adams State University fell 16-5 in their series finale against No. 23 Colorado Mesa University.
Niemi finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored but the Mavericks (34-8, 26-2 RMAC) possessed plenty of offensive firepower with four players notching a multi-hit outing. In total, Colorado Mesa totaled seven extra-base hits compared to three for Adams State.
The Grizzlies (11-31, 5-23 RMAC) sent pitcher
Ryan Ferguson (1-3) to the mound for a Sunday start as the senior opened strong with a scoreless first and second inning. Ferguson forced three ground outs in the second but gave up a run in the third. Ferguson saw his day come to an end during CMU's six-run fourth. Ferguson's outing concluded with five runs allowed, six hits, and seven ground outs in 3.1 innings.
The Mavericks followed with six more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two runs in the ninth.
A CMU wild pitch in the bottom of the first brought
Michael Downs in to score, giving ASU an early 1-0 lead. CMU tied the game with a run in the third before exploding in the fourth and fifth.
The Grizzlies biggest production came in the fourth thanks to home run shots from April and Niemi. Prior to the home runs,
Grant Templin reached base with a double to left field and scored on April's home run to center field. ASU's final run came in the eighth as a Niemi RBI single through the right side scored
Derek Denovellis.
AJ Landis (3-1) earned the win for Colorado Mesa in a relief appearance. The Mavericks utilized seven pitchers as the Grizzlies used six during the RMAC tilt.
Adams State returns to the diamond for a four-game series at New Mexico Highlands University beginning April 28
th. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3pm from Las Vegas, N.M.
