SB| Grizzlies salvage one in Sunday split

CHADRON, Neb.--The Adams State University Softball team kept their postseason hopes narrowly alive on Sunday as they pulled out a split and salvaged one win during their four-game series with the Chadron State College Eagles.

On Sunday, a day after the Eagles clinched a playoff spot, the Grizzlies fell 6-1 in the opening game before rallying back and getting an 8-1 win in the final game.

Adams State is 17-29 overall and 16-20 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conferece. They are tied with New Mexico Highlands (19-30 overall) for the eighth place in the current RMAC standings. That means next week's four-game series between the Metro State University Denver Roadrunners, who are 34-17 overall and 26-10 in RMAC  play, and the series between New Mexico Highlands University and the Regis

Rangers, who are 28-24 overall and 20-16 in conference play, critical games. The Grizzlies and Road Runners will meet up with their Parent's Weekend and Senior Day doubleheaders highlighting the weekend.Saturday's events will start at 12 p.m. while Sunday's, which will include senior day festivities, will start at 11 a.m.

In the first game, Adams State found themselves down 2-0 as the Grizzlies gave up a single run in the bottom of the first before a solo home run from Zoe Humphries was hit in the bottom of the third.

Adams State scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth as Kaytlynn Johnson singled up the middle to score Taya McWilliams.

The Eagles closed out the game with a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth.

Madison Vrabel, was tabbed with her third loss of the season as she pitched a complete game and surrendered six runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two.

Offensively, ASU had two hits,both from Kaytlynn Johnson and one was a double.

The second game saw two three-run innings for the Grizzlies as they rallied for 13 hits.

The first run came in the top of the second inning when Paige Reichmuth grounded out with the bases loaded to push April Riggins across the plate.

The first three-run inning all happened on one swing of the batt as McKenzie Villarreal hit a three-run jack to center field to score seniors Gabrielle Griego and Marissa Harmon.

The Eagles scratched their lone run across in the bottom of the third.

ASU then scored three in the top of the fifth as Griego homered to left center for a solo run before Cheynne Hamilton singled to center field to score Villarreal and McWilliams.

The final run of the game came on an error that saw Hamilton reach and McWilliams to score.

The player of the game had to be Villarreal, who was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI.

Lauren Murphy earned the win and moves to 12-10 as she pitched a complete game and gave up the one walk in two hits and two walks. She had five strikeouts on the day.
