SB | Fourth Inning Woes Haunt Grizzlies

DENVER – Adams State University softball team dropped a four game series last weekend against Regis University in Denver, Colorado. The Rangers were victorious by ways of a 0-10, 2-5, 3-6 and 6-10 scores at home. Adams State will look to bounce back at Black Hills State this weekend, weather permitting; or at home against Colorado Mesa University the first weekend of March.

The first game was a quick one, as no Grizzly made it to the plate more than twice in the 10-0 shutout. A two-run homerun in the first opened up the scoring for the Rangers, while a second inning three-run homer put the game out of reach early.

In the following game of the first day, Adams jumped out to a quick two-nothing lead with Kaytlynn Johnson getting an RBI on a single that brought Kenzie Lange home. Later that inning, April Riggins singled up the right side to bring Madison Shawver home. The lead was relinquished in the fourth inning on a pair of home runs in the fourth that brought home four runs.

Game three had a similar story to game two, with Stephanie Huff doubling to right center in the second inning to bring Shelby Haskins home. Adams would extend its lead in the top of the fourth with Alexis Martinez bring home Tyler Hays, followed by Huff bringing home Jasmine Parker. The game would be tied in the bottom of the fourth and lost in the bottom of the fifth due to Regis' Heronema who had an RBI single in the fourth, followed by stealing home for the tie. In the fifth she would bring home the final run of the game on an RBI single.

In the final game, Regis scored 10 unanswered runs in the first and second inning off of 11 hits. The comeback looked improbably, but Brittany Phillips was a perfect four-for-four from the plate with an RBI and a pair of doubles to keep the run rule out of play. She was joined by Huff who was two-of-three with four RBIs and a double.

Johnson was three-for-four from the plate in the second game with an RBI, while Riggins pinch hit for a hit and RBI. Huff earned herself two RBIs on one hit in the second game, earning a team-high six RBIs this weekend.
