ALAMOSA – The Adams State University softball team split a pair of games against New Mexico Highlands today on the ASU Softball Field.
The day began with the Grizzlies taking out the Cowgirls in game one, 8-3. A Stephanie Huff single in the bottom of the first sent Tyler Hays home for the first run of the game. Highlands bounced back in the top of the second scoring three runs on four hits. Adams scored three runs of its' own in the second inning beginning with a Kaytlynn Johnson homer. The Grizzlies put up another three runs in the bottom of the fifth increasing its three run lead to four. Adams State put up one more run in the bottom of the sixth before closing it out in the top of the seventh.
Taya McWilliams went two-for-two for the Grizzlies with a single and a double. Tyler Hays had another solid game with two doubles on three at bats. Johnson earned her first homerun of the season with a team-high of three RBIs.
Kacee Schroeder pitched a complete game giving up just three earned runs on seven hits. She walked just one batter the entire game, while striking out three.
Game two began with Highlands taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back homers from Hays and April Riggins tied the game in the bottom of the third. However, the Cowgirls would put up 11 runs in the next three innings leaving the Grizzlies behind 13-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Highlands closed it out in the bottom of the sixth, earning its first victory of the series.
Shelby Haskins, Hays, and Riggins each sent one out of the park for the Grizzlies in game two. Six errors by the Grizzlies led to seven unearned runs for the Cowgirls.
Whitney Fields earned the loss giving up six earned runs on 11 hits. She walked nine batters while striking out five in 5.2 innings pitched.
Adams State travels to Durango, Colorado for a series against Fort Lewis College next weekend.
