WSOC | Grizzlies Lose in Close Finish in Conference Opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State women's soccer team lost in their conference opener to Regis University on Friday afternoon, 3-2. The loss drops the Grizzlies to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Grizzlies offense was on the attack early as Diana Cerillo scored in the 13th minute to give the Grizzlies the early lead. It was Cerillo's third goal of the season. Following the goal, the Grizzlies kept the Rangers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half. The Grizzlies only had one shot on goal during the first half of play, but it gave the Grizzlies the lead. Corri Zaiger had four saves at the break for the Grizzlies. The Rangers picked up the pace during the beginning of the second half.

The Rangers scored three goals in a seven minute span to take a comfortable lead. Cat Devitt tied things up at 1-all in the 47th minute with a perfectly placed shot in the top right corner of the net. Moments later, Emily Ramos gave the Rangers the lead with another well-placed shot that alluded Zaiger. Natasha Wehner added to the lead in the 54th minute with a goal of her own.

The two-goal deficit remained until Carly Kading got the Grizzlies back into the game with a 30-yard strike in the 84th minute. The Rangers ended up holding off the Grizzlies offensive attack until the final whistle.

The Rangers outshot the Grizzlies 16-8 with nine being on goal to the Grizzlies four. The Grizzlies two goals were the most allowed all season by the Rangers and goalkeeper, Julia Coombs, who came into the game with the third best save percentage and most shutouts in the RMAC.

Adams State falls to 1-4 on the season. The Grizzlies will take on Black Hills State University at home on Sunday, Sept. 16. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.
