WSOC | Grizzlies Drop Home Opener to West Texas A&M

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State University Women's Soccer team opened its 2018 home slate Saturday afternoon as they hosted West Texas A&M University. The Grizzlies managed to hold a 1-1 tie for much of the match before two late goals lifted the Lady Buffs over them, 3-1, at the ASU Soccer Field. With the loss, Adams State is now 1-2 on the season.

The Grizzlies grabbed the early against the Lady Buffs scoring their first goal at home at 5:44 mark of the first period. Diana Cerillo got down the sideline and nailed a line drive shot for her first goal of the season. The Grizzlies maintained the 1-0 advantage for much of the first half. 

West Texas A&M responded late in the half tying the game up at 1-all with a goal in the 36th minute. Hannah Kelley-Lusk got inside the box and knocked a quick shot from short distance thanks to an assist from Khaline Jacobs to get the Lady Buffs on the board. Going into the break the, the Grizzlies were outshot 14-3 but had the saves advantage at 4-0.

The second half was a battle as the teams were tied tied up until the 71st minute. West Texas A&M ended the tie with a goal at 71:08 mark as Jacobs hit a line drive ball past Corri Zaiger to go up 2-1. Exactly 31 seconds later, Jacobs cushioned the Lady Buffs lead to 3-1 off a shot from the top of the box on a Kelley-Lusk assist. 

Adams State showed aggression in the second half getting off seven shots, with four coming on goal. For the game, both Eli Zimmer and Chloe Cook led the team in shots with two apiece. Cerillo tallied two point son her lone goal for the Grizzlies, while Zaiger grabbed eight saves in net. As a team, the Grizzlies posted 10 shots for the game.

For the Lady Buffs, Jacobs paced the way with five points on two goals and one assists. She took five shots on the afternoon with three coming on goal. Kelley-Luck hed all players with a game-high nine shots and shots on goal. Goalkeeper Courtney Dippel grabbed four saves in 90 minute sof action to improve 2-1.
