Grizzlies Downed at Home in Sunday Bout with Westminster

ALAMOSA, Colo. – To finish out homecoming weekend the Adams State Women's soccer team met with Westminster College in an early morning game on Sunday. The game would result in a tough loss, stretching their losing streak to 5 games in a row.

The Grizzlies started the game out strong by maintaining majority of the possession for the first twenty minutes of the game. In the 15th minute, the Grizzlies were able to draw a corner kick that Carena Harrison crossed into the middle. Zoe Moses went up for the header, heading it to an awaiting Mollee Heeney who swiftly put it in the back of the net for her first goal of her college career. Her goal also opened the scoring for the game, putting the Grizzlies up 1-0 early in the half. Only 15 minutes later would Westminster answer by netting a turnover and tying the game up.

Going into the second half the game was tied up at 1-1, but that would quickly change in the 53rd minute when Westminster would score their second of the game. Shortly after, Westminster would put in another goal to pull them ahead 3-1. The Griffins capitalized on turnovers and failed passes, utilizing them to put their team ahead. For the last 30 minutes of the game, possession bounced back and forth between teams as the Grizzlies fought to pull off an upsetting comeback. Grizzlies were able to put a few shots on goal, but each was denied by Westminster's keeper.

Westminster produced 16 shots with at least 8 of those shots being on goal. Corri Zaiger stopped 5 of those shots on goal, adding five saves to her career. Grizzlies defense kept on their toes, blocking shots with their body and helping with key and effective transitions to the offense. The one goal the Grizzlies did score was put in by Heeney, a large contributor to the Grizzly defense and someone who consistently helps lead the defense in front of her keeper.

Coming out of the weekend, Adams State Women's soccer team stands at 3-9 overall and 1-8 in their conference. Though the weekend did not go as the team wanted, they held their own against some of the better teams of their conference and showed signs of growth. The Grizzlies will spend the upcoming week preparing for another weekend homestand in which they hope to end their losing streak against Colorado Mesa and take a win against Western Colorado.
