Grizzlies End 2019 On A High Note, Outlasting the Pack 2-1 On the Road

Pueblo, Colo. – The Adams State Women's soccer team traveled to Pueblo to face off against the Thunderwolves. Grizzlies would defeat CSU-Pueblo in a tight game to finish off their regular season.

Opening the game up with a quick start was Diana Cerillo for the Grizzlies who scored within the first ten minutes. Chloe Marston got the assist on the goal, setting Cerillo up for the first goal of the game and the first of Cerillo's 2019 season. Following the goal, the Grizzlies offense kept the pressure on by staying in Thunderwolf territory and placing consecutive shots at the goal, each just barely missing to the side.

Not too much later in the game, the Grizzlies offense made some noise again by netting another goal. In the 17th minute Jayne Schiess helped to set up senior Brenna Oakey for her first goal of the season and the second goal of the game for the Grizzles. This year will be the last year Oakey will play with the Adams State Women's soccer team seeing as she will be graduating, but she left her mark in the program and certainly in the game with the goal. Unfortunately, the safe 2-goal lead would be cut in half by a CSU-Pueblo goal later in the first half.

Going into the second half, it was a tight-knit game. However, the Grizzlies defense was able to hold the Thunderwolves off and pull out the 2-1 win. Pueblo put 18 shots on, with 7 of them being on goal. Senior Corri Zaiger added 6 saves to her career in her final game as a Grizzly, standing strong behind her team and helping them to end their season on a high note. All three seniors played a big role in today's game just as they have all season. Zaiger and Molle Heeney led the defensive unit in games and Oakey filled in where needed and being a much needed versatile player.

Head Coach Colin Baker expressed his appreciation for the seniors after the game saying, "It's bitter sweet to end the season this way because it sends out seniors off with a big victory. But in the end we want to be a program that's playing deep into November. We're building towards that one day at a time and our senior class is a huge reason for that. They're everything I could've asked for in my first year and because of them the perception of our program has changed big time."

A win was just what the team needed, and they earned it according to Coach Baker who said, "The team came together and fought for one another today. We talk about the little details that paint the bigger picture on both sides of the ball all the time and our execution today was tremendous." To say he was proud of the team could almost be an understatement for how happy he was with the growth he's seen. The girl's team has pushed themselves to grow and be better than they have been in previous years. The Adams State Women's soccer team doubled their wins from last year and earned themselves an overall 2019 record of 5-11 with a conference record of 3-10. While they may not have made the RMAC conference tournament, they still accomplished what they set out to do which was put the team first, establish their name, and improve the program.

Despite just ending the regular season, Coach Baker is already looking toward next season, "We will enjoy this win. But starting tomorrow we turn our attention to the 2020 season with the group we have returning. We're hoping the next season is the year our program officially gets put on the map." And based off the tremendous work, effort, and dedication from the 2019 team, other teams are going to have to watch out for the Grizzlies next year. They're coming for the conference.
