ThunderWolves Claim Series Opener Against Grizzlies

PUEBLO, Colo. - Adams State Baseball had a tough opening day as the team dropped a 25-1 contest on the road to Colorado State-Pueblo to start the 2019 season.

The ThunderWolves (1-0) got off to a strong start in the very first inning of play scoring 12 runs and never looking back. The Grizzlies (0-1) managed just eight hits on the afternoon while both squads had two errors on the day.

CSU-Pueblo got its offense going with its 12 runs scored on seven hits. The first four batters got a hit to make it a 2-0 contest right away. Following a walk from Adams State, the home team then got a two RBI double to make it 4-0 and then a three-run homer to to left center to make it a 7-0 game.

The Grizzlies then forced out the next two batters but three straight walks from David Maldonado loaded the bases. Maldonado then hit the next batter to give up a run. The ThunderWolves made it 10-0 with a two-RBI base hit through the left side. 

After the single, Adams State made a pitching change but three straight walks from Kolton Bleggi scored two runs before the visitors finally closed out the opening frame.

CSU-Pueblo did not score again until the third but held Adams State scoreless to go up 13-0. After a scoreless fourth inning, CSU-Pueblo scored a pair of runs in the fifth to lead 15-0. 

The Grizzlies lone run of the afternoon came in the sixth inning. Nico Nintze led off with a double to right center to get in scoring position. Jared Gay wasted little time getting Ninzte home as he drove him in with an RBI triple to right center.

The ThunderWolves responded scoring nine runs in the final two innings with six of them coming in the bottom of the eighth. The nine runs put the final score at 25-1 as the home team secured the opening day win.

Gay led the way for the Grizzlies batting 2-3 with an RBI. Nintze was 1-3 on the day with a run scored. Jessie Hernandez and Erik Hildebrandt both went 1-2 on the day. Maldonado suffered the loss on the mound to start 0-1. Bleggi saw the most time on the mound pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three batters.

Adrian Martinez and Aidan Welch both finished 3-4 on the day with Martinez totaling three runs with two RBI's. Welch also had two RBI's and scored one run. Danile Abiles had two hits in five at bats and a game-high seven RBI's to go along with two runs scored. Beau Brieske (1-0) got the start on the hill and went five innings. he allowed just four hits and fanned 10 batters for the game.

Game two of the three-game series resumes tomorrow, Feb. 2. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Rawlings Field.
