Canyon, Texas - Adams State dropped a pair of games to West Texas A&M in a doubleheader showdown on Saturday. It was a tale of two games as the Grizzlies ultimately went 0-2 to fall to 0-6 on the year.
Game one was a battle the whole way through as the winner was determined in extra innings. The seven inning game ended up going nine innings with the Grizzlies falling in a tight battle, 6-5.
The game stayed close throughout, with the Grizzlies taking an early 2-0 lead, the Buffs (7-0) struck right back scoring five runs in the second inning. The Buffs then were not able to score again until extra innings and Adams State tied up the score with three in the sixth inning. The Buffs were able to pull away with the victory with a single run scored in the ninth inning.
The Grizzlies started strong with Jake Angelopulos getting a single in the first inning, Logan Bistrup then tripled to left center driving in the first run of the game. Bistrup was then driven in by a Nico Nintze single up the middle.
The bottom of the first and top of the second went quickly as both teams went three up and three down. The bottom of the second saw the bats come alive for the Buffs as they scored five runs off a Justice Nakagawa single that scored two and a Keone Givens three-run homerun.
The next three innings went quietly as both starting pitchers, Troy Gutbub for the Grizzlies and Drew Mesecher for the Buffs, threw some quality innings.
The Grizzlies made a furious comeback in the top of the sixth scoring three runs, Orlando Romero doubled down the left field line to drive in the first run of the inning. Paul Giglio rewarded Romero as he also doubled down the left field line to drive in the next two runs and tie up the game for the Grizzlies.
The game headed to extras as neither team managed to push across the winning run in regulation. In the bottom of the ninth, the Buffs were able bring home the winning run off the bat of Clay Koelzer who singled through the left side.
Kolton Bleggi took the loss for the Grizzlies pitching in relief moving to (0-1) on the season. Dominic Yearego secured the win for the Buffs, moving to (1-0) on the season.
The Grizzlies were led on offense by Logan Bistrup who had three hits and a RBI and Nico Nintze who had two hits and a RBI. Kolton Bleggi in the loss pitched three innings and had four strikeouts with only one earned run.
The top of the order carried the Buffs to victory as the leadoff hitter, Keone Givens had two hits, three RBIs and a homerun and the three hitter Clay Koelzer had two hits and the game winning RBI.
Adams State and West Texas A&M picked right back up with the second game of the day. West Texas A&M was able to keep the momentum from the walk off victory going as the controlled the entire game, winning 11-0. This moved them to (7-0) on the season as Adams State continued their rough stretch of games, falling to (0-6).
There were not many highlights for the Grizzlies in this game as West Texas A&M dominated the entire game. It started slow for both teams as there was no scoring in the first three innings but the floodgates opened in the fourth and fifth innings for the Buffs, scoring 11 runs on only nine hits.
It was the only scoring of the game for Buffs but it was enough to secure the win as the Grizzlies were shut out for the first time this year. Jamison Fuentes was the highlight of the game for the Grizzlies as he struck out four batters in 1.3 innings of work.
The Buffs offense was driven by Justin Martinez who had a two run homerun and Kyle Kauffman who had two hits and two RBIs.
Darin Cook pitched the entire game as fanned 10 batters. His seven innings of work led to his first career- no-hit game on the mound to improve to 1-0.
The Grizzlies and Buffs will close out their four-game series Sunday morning. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. inside Wilder Park.
