Grizzlies Drop a Pair in First Conference Games

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Adams State Softball had a rough couple of outings in their first day of RMAC play. The Grizzlies lost a heartbreaker to #13 Dixie State 2-4 and the second game to Colorado Christian 9-3. This pair of losses puts Adams State back to 0-14, and 0-2 in RMAC.

In game one, Adams State put up two runs on nine hits, while Dixie State (7-1) had four runs on six hits. The Grizzlies were leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Trailblazers prevailed in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs, setting the final tally.

Brittany Phillips went 5.1 innings, with two strikeouts, one of which came in the first inning. Adams State was the first to get on the board in the second inning with a bases loaded walk. But the Grizzlies were unable to capitalize any further that inning.

After a couple of singles by Phillips and Kenzie Lange, in the top of the fourth, Adams State took advantage of a pair of throwing errors to plate another run. In the bottom of the frame, Dixie was able to string together a couple of hits to cut the lead 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Trailblazers led off with a double. On a throwing error, Dixie State tied it up 2-2. The game was broken open with the deciding two runs on a double to left center platting two Trailblazers. With the last shot at the top of the seventh, the Grizzlies went down in order.

Phillips and Julia Jimenez both had a pair of hits on the day. The nine hits mark the second most hits Adams State has gotten in a game so far this season.

Looking to build on the nine hits from the morning game, Adams State took on Colorado Christian (6-5). The Grizzlies managed three runs on three hits, while the Cougars swung for nine runs on 12 hits.

Jade Garbiso went 6.1 innings, with one strikeout. Cougars pitcher, Kenzie Mattey, had a complete game with two strikeouts on three hits.

In the top of the first, Colorado Christian loaded the bases with no outs. On a comebacker to Garbiso, the Grizzlies cut down the run at home. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were not able to get out of the inning, giving up a single to score two.

Off of three singles, the Cougars added two more runs to their score in the top of the second, leading the Grizzlies 4-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Grizzlies led off with a walk and then reached on a throwing error. Alyssa Solorzano grounded out to first while Sarah Rocha scored, giving the Grizzlies their first run.

In the top of the third, from another single the Cougars scored again, putting them up 5-1. After going scoreless in the fourth, the Grizzlies found their second run in the bottom of the fifth. Jasmine Parker reached on a throwing error by Colorado Christian, then was advanced on single by Rebeca Wood and scored on the subsequent error.

The game opened up in the top of the sixth, where Colorado Christian hit a lead off homer, putting the Cougars up 6-2. After two more singles, the Cougars found a second run for the inning from a wild pitch, then their third run of the inning from a sac-fly.

The Grizzlies found their third and final run in the bottom of the sixth, from a loaded bases situation by Cougar error and a pair of walks; ultimately getting the run on a fielders choice by Shelby Haskins.

The Cougars got their final run in the top of the seventh, pushing the final 9-3.

The Grizzlies hit the field again tomorrow, Monday Feb. 24, to play another pair of games in St. George. The game times are set to face Colorado Christian at 1 p.m. and Dixie State at 3 p.m.
