Sixth Inning Rally Sets Grizzlies Back in Series Finale Against ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo. - Adams State Baseball got out to a solid start for the second straight game but once again feel short to a rally from CSU-Pueblo to drop the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies (0-3) got out to a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning but were not able to produce a run in the final three innings and gave up 18 in that span to fall 21-7 to the ThunderWolves (3-0).

The game started in the Grizzlies favor as they drew back-to-back walks to start the contest. Two batters later Jared Gay smacked a base hit through the left side to give the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead early on.

Daniel Brennan got the starting nod on the hill and put together a solid outing in 4.1 innings of work. He gave up just six hits and two runs, both earned, and three of hits came in the first inning. Despite the three hits, he and the Grizzlies defense kept the ThunderWolves scoreless.

The two squads went scoreless in the second frame as neither managed to produce a hit to keep the game at 1-0 going into the third inning. The fourth inning belonged to the Grizzlies as they produced four runs and held the ThunderWolves to just one.

Erik Hildebrandt got things started for Adams State with a leadoff single but was then picked off trying to steal second. With one out, Adams State then produced its four runs before CSU-Pueblo ended the inning. The team's four runs came on five hits, including a home run.

Jake Angelopulos got on base with a bunt single that bounced over the pitcher's head. Logan Bistrup followed him up with a double to get the two in scoring position. Jarded Gay then got to first on an error from third base that scored a Grizzly runner to make it 2-0. Enter left fielder Nico Nintze.

Ninzte stepped up to the plate and delivered a three-run bomb to center field wall that took a hard bounce for Ninzte to get the inside the park home run which gave Adams State a 5-0 lead. CSU-Pueblo then managed to stop the bleeding with three straight outs to end the inning.

A solo home run to center field in the bottom of the third ended the ThunderWolves scoring drought and brought the game to 5-1 before the Grizzlies closed out the inning. The home team then made a pitching change to start the fourth ad forced three straight outs to get back on offense.

Both squads were held scoreless in the fourth and the Grizzlies did not score in the top of the fifth inning. The ThunderWolves cut into the lead with a two RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Grizzlies lead to 5-3 going in the sixth.

Adams State got the two runs back in the top of the sixth frame on five hits to maintain a four-run lead midway through the game. Dakota Solis led off with a single to third base and was rewarded with a run scored three batters later to make it 6-3. Jesse Hernandez scored the second run as a pinch runner for Noah Befus who got on base with a RBI single that scored Solis.

The Grizzlies two runs in the sixth were their last of the game as the ThunderWolves rallied with 10 runs in the sixth and 18 total in the final three innings. Their 10 runs scored in the sixth frame came on six hits.

Both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning but eight runs from CSU-Pueblo in the bottom of the eighth inning on six hits help them secure a 14-run victory at home for the series sweep.

Nintze was the top hitter for the Grizzlies going 2-4 with three-RBI, a run scored, and a home run on the day. Hildebrandt also went 2-4 in the game and had a run scored. Angelopulos was 2-3 with a RBI, a run scored, and drew two walks. Solid finished with two hits in four at bats and scored one run as well. Brennan had a game-high six strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched gave up two runs, both earned, on six hits.

Dakota Popham went 5-6 on the day with three RBI and four runs scored to go along with a home run. Rion Santamaria was a perfect 4-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Aidan Welch went 2-4 four with one RBI and three runs scored. JP Hopkins had four RBI on a grand slam home run and scored one run. Matt Goytia (1-0) got the win on the mound. He pitched two innings and allowed two hits while walking three batters.

The Grizzlies will continue their road trip next weekend as they head to the Lone Star state for a four-game series at West Texas A&M. The series is set to begin on Feb. 8 at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
