ALAMOSA, Colo. – The final game of the four game series between Adams State and MSU Denver. The game was highlighted by a flurry of hits for both teams but MSU Denver was able to capitalize.
The Roadrunners (16-7, 10-2 RMAC) got off to a hot start and didn't look back as they maintained the lead throughout the game and secured the sweep of Adams State (6-20, 3-9 RMAC).
The first inning got started with two straight hits for the Roadrunners, and then a home run from the bat of Matt Malkin. Two fielder's choices brought in two more runners and at the end of the first, MSU Denver led Adams State 4-0.
The Roadrunners struck again in the next inning as Matt Malkin back up at the plate hit another two run home run to center field bringing the score up to 6-0 in favor of MSU Denver.
The bottom of the second saw the first runs get on the board for the Grizzlies as
Dakota Solis doubled to left center and
Patrick Huffaker followed up with a double of his own to bring in Solis and get Adams State on the board.
MSU Denver continued the scoring surge in the third inning as Jake Kistaitis hit a two run home run to center field, which was followed by a RBI triple from Chase Anderson and a single from Logan Soole to get MSU Denver into double digit runs, leading 10-1.
After a three up, three down inning for Adams State, MSU Denver came out in the top of the fourth and after a leadoff walk, Zach Walsh homered to left field bringing in two runs and increasing the lead to 12-1.
The Grizzlies were able to get two runners on in the fourth inning with an
Orlando Romero single and a
Dakota Solis double but couldn't score as the next two batters could not get a hit.
Two more runs for the Roadrunners scored in the fifth on a RBI groundout and a single through the left side. Both teams remained scoreless until the eighth inning as the Roadrunners scored the fifteenth run of the game for MSU Denver on a wild pitch.
The Grizzlies were able to get the offensive going again as
Jared Gay homered to left field to lead off the inning. With two outs three straight singles from Solis,
Jesse Hernandez, and
Tyler Erzen brought in the second run of the inning as Solis scored on the Erzen single.
The Grizzlies threw one last punch in the bottom of the ninth as
Jared Gay crushed his second home run of the game to left field bringing home
Erik Hildebrandt who had doubled the at bat before. That was all that Adams State could muster as the final score was 15-5 in favor of MSU Denver.
The Grizzlies were able to match MSU Denver in hits but could not match the power and hitting with runners in scoring position that the Roadrunners had.
Jared Gay had a great day as he had four hits with three RBI, two runs scored and two home runs.
Dakota Solis also had four hits on the day with two runs scored.
Erik Hildebrandt had two hits and a run scored.
Patrick Huffaker and
Tyler Erzen both had a RBI.
Troy Gutbub started the game and threw 4.0 innings with four strikeouts, he took the loss from the game and fell to 2-3 on the season.
MSU Denver was once again led by Matt Malkin who had two hits, two home runs, and four RBI. Chase Anderson and Zach Paschke both had three hits on the day. Zach Walsh and Jake Kistaitis both hit home runs. Branden Dehority started the game and pitched for 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and only allowed one run, getting the win and moving to 2-0 on the year.
Adams State Baseball is on the road next weekend as they travel to Golden Colorado to take on the Colorado School of Mines. It will be a four game series with one game on Friday and Sunday and a double header on Saturday. First pitch will be Friday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
