Mavericks Shutout Grizzlies in Series Opener

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Baseball headed to the western slope to take on  No. 8 Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction for the first game of the series for this weekend.
 
Colorado Mesa (28-7, 16-5 RMAC) got off to an early lead as they scored in the first five innings and Adams State (7-28, 4-17 RMAC) could not keep up with one of the best teams in the country. The Mavericks ultimately downed the Grizzlies, 12-0, to take the series opener.
 
The Mavericks got off to a hot start, with two runs being scored in the first inning off a Chase Hamilton single and a Jordon Stubbings sacrifice fly. A wild pitch scored the third run in the second inning.
 
The Mavericks scored two more runs in the bottom of the third on a Trevin Reynolds sacrifice fly, and Tyler Sandoval doubled down the left field line. The bottom of the fourth three more runs scored on a Dominic DeMarco double to right center. Hayden McGeary drove in the next two runs on another double to left center bringing the score to 8-0.
 
Chase Hamilton singled through the right side scoring DeMarco and continuing to increase the lead for the Mavericks.
 
The sixth inning was the first inning in the game that there were no runs scored as Chance Strand only allowed run baserunner as he came in to relieve Dominic Lomeli.
 
The seventh inning was more scoring for Colorado Mesa, The first run of the inning came on a throwing error by the catcher and the second run was on a RBI groundout, leaving the score 11-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
 
The final run of the game was driven in thanks to Tyler Sandoval reaching on a fielder's choice to bring the score to 12-0 for Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks held Adams State to just two hits and had 12 of their own in the victory.
 
Jared Gay and Cameron Brosh had the only two hits for Adams State, Gay with a single and Brosh with a double. Jared Gay also had a stolen base.
 
Kolton Bleggi started the game and went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. He did take the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season.
 
Dominic DeMarco went three for three with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Mavericks on offense. Chase Hamilton had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored also help lead the way.
 
AJ Landis started the game for Colorado Mesa and threw 7.0 innings only giving up one hit with seven strikeouts and getting the win to move to 4-1 on the season.
 
The two teams are back in action tomorrow for a double header, the first pitch will be at 1 p.m.
