Mavericks Hold Off Grizzlies in Sunday Tilt

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Adams State Men's Lacrosse ended the road portion of its 2019 schedule with a tough loss Sunday at Colorado Mesa, 17-5.
 
The Grizzlies (3-6, 0-3 RMAC) was again were unable to overcome a slow start, while the Mavericks (7-6, 2-1 RMAC) used a fast start to propel to the win at home. The Mavericks held the Grizzlies to two or less goals in each period and scored three or more on their end to secure the win.
 
The first period saw CMU put up three quick goals in the first 4:30 of play to lead Adams State 3-0. The Grizzlies managed to score two goals in the first period but the Mavericks put up six total to lead by four after one.
 
Tanner Beck ended the Grizzlies drought at the 10:10 mark of the first period with a goal off the assist from Riley Morrison. The Mavericks countered with a goal at the 8:08 mark and the 5:59 mark to maintain a four-goal edge, 5-1.
 
Beck once again answered for the Grizzlies with his second goal of the frame. This time is was unassisted as Beck weaved through the Maverick defense to find the back of the net and brought the Grizzlies deficit to three yet again, 5-2.
 
The Mavericks offense looked to keep its early momentum going and they did as they added one more goal late in the first to lead 6-2. They then scored four goals in the second period and their defense held the Grizzlies scoreless to lead 10-2 at halftime.
 
Helping CMU build its eight-goal lead was thanks to 37 shots in the first 30 minutes of play, with 25 coming on goal. Defensively, CMU held Adams State to just 13 shots overall and four shots on goal.
 
CMU was once struck first to open the second half with a goal in the first three minutes of the third. The goal capped off a 6-0 scoring run for the Mavericks that spanned from the end of the first period as they owned a 11-2 lead.
 
The Grizzlies countered with two goals in a span of 61 seconds in the third to cut the score to 11-4. Morrison and Beck teamed up once again for the first of the two goals. Beck found Morrison at the 10:26 mark for the goal.
 
The second goal of the third came from Morrison once again as Donnie Simon assisted him at the 9:25 point of play to get the Grizzlies within seven of the Mavericks. The home then responded with three straight goals to lead 14-4 after the third.
 
CMU added three goals in the fourth and held the Grizzlies to just one as they held on for the 17-5 win at home. Johnny Rosas scored the Grizzlies final goal thanks to the assist from Brennan Grass.
 
Beck and Morrison each finished two goals and one assist to lead the Grizzlies. Beck had the most shots seven. Simon and Grass also had an assist in the game. Roman Pepelyaev had the most faceoffs with 10 but finished just 1-10 for the game. In net, Connor Johnson tallied 17 saves.
 
Joe Wolfurst IV and Carson Schwark each had three goals in the win for CMU to lead the offense. Wulforst also tallied an assist for a game-high four points. Beau Lansdown led the way in assist with two to lead all players and he scored a goal for a total of three points. Goalies Christian Cerry and Nick Wilson spilt time in net. Cherry got the win and had two saves, while Wilson had five saves to lead the duo.
 
The Grizzlies will remain at home for their final three games of the regular season. They start their final homestand Saturday, April 20 against CSU-Pueblo. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at the ASU Lacrosse Field.
