ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies defeated the Regis Rangers in their final home game of the year. The Grizzlies took two of four from the Rangers in their four-game series. Adams State moves to 12-33 (12-21 RMAC) while Regis University moves to 15-22 (12-19 RMAC).
The Rangers took game one 7-2. Opening the game, Regis hit a double up the middle, and was brought home on a single up the middle. With an early 1-0 lead, the Grizzlies had a quick three-up-three-down bottom first.
After a quiet second inning, the Rangers added their second run in the top of the third from a home run to left center field. Adams State had a promising fourth inning, with a lead-off single to third base from
Samantha McDonald.
Shelby Haskins joined McDonald on the bags after getting hit by a pitch.
Brittany Phillips loaded the bases with a fielder's choice, advancing McDonald and Haskins. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were unable to take advantage of their bases loaded opportunity.
In the Rangers added another tally to the board with a lead-off homerun down the left field line. The Rangers led the Grizzlies 3-0 going in to the top of the seventh.
From three singles to the outfield, the bases were loaded with two outs. The Rangers crushed a single down the right field line to score three. Following the bases clearing single, the Rangers hit a triple to deep right center to score their seventh and final run.
Adams State answered in the bottom of the seventh.
Zoe Munn homered to left center to get the first run on the board for Adams State. Following Munn,
Kenzie Lange hit a ground-rule double.
Angel Micciulli reached on a fielding error by the second basemen, which scored Lange.
The Grizzlies only found four hits on their two runs in game one. Phillips, Munn, and Lange all went 1-3 in the first game of the double header.
Adams State's bats woke up in game two, with 18 hits on their 11 runs. Both teams started off strong in the first inning.
At the top half of the inning, the Rangers led-off with two singles through the left side. Regis followed with a double to right center to score two.
Adams State answered in the bottom of the first with a lead-off double by Micciulli. She advanced to second on a groundout by
Sarah Rocha.
Shelby Haskins homered to left center to tie the game at two.
Regis responded with a big second inning. The Rangers led off with a walk, then reached and advanced to second on an error. The next Ranger up to bat hit a triple down the left field line to score two. Regis added two more on the board with a homerun to left center field. At the end of the inning, the Rangers led the Grizzlies 6-2.
Adams State opened the bottom half of the inning from
Jade Garbiso hitting a ground-rule double.
Breanna Shaffer reached on a single to the shortstop. Micciulli singled to left field, advancing both runners up one bag. Haskins received her third RBI on the day with a walk, advancing Garbiso home. At the end of the second, the Grizzlies trailed 6-3.
With quiet third and fourth innings, the Rangers led off with a single to center field. After reaching on an error and a batter getting hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded with no outs. The Rangers hit a double to left field to score two, extending their lead by five.
Adams State quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Phillips opened the inning with a homerun to left center, cutting the Ranger lead to four.
The Rangers added their ninth run in the top of the sixth. With a single down the left field line, the runner scored on the following double hit to center field. The Rangers added their tenth run from a lead-off triple to right center, and scored on a sac fly to left field.
Adams State came out hungry in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out,
Sarah Hansen singled to third base to get aboard. With two consecutive singles from Garbiso and Shaffer, Hansen reached third. Munn came in to pinch hit for
Rachel Mobley, and singled through the left side to score Hansen. Trailing by five, Micciulli singled up the middle to score Garbiso. With the sixth consecutive single, Roach scored Shaffer, to cut the deficit 10-7. Haskins came up big hitting a walk-off grand slam to defeat the Rangers 11-10.
Haskins finished the game with two homeruns and six RBI. Micciulli finished the day going 4-4 with one RBI, and Phillips went 3-4 with an RBI. Garbiso went 2-3 and pitched a full seven innings with three strikeouts. The win puts Garbiso at 5-15 on the year.
After splitting their final homestand of the regular season, they will be back out on the diamond next weekend for their final regular season series against University of Colorado – Colorado Springs. They are set to play at 12 and 2 p.m. Friday April 26, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday April 27.
