Grizzlies Tripped Up at Home By Mavericks

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Men's Lacrosse got its final weekend of regular season play started Friday afternoon against Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks defeated the Grizzlies 10-4 to secure the road win.

The Mavericks (8-7, 3-2 RMAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period before the Grizzlies (3-8, 0-5 RMAC) were able to respond and get on the board.

Helping Colorado Mesa secure the six-goal road win was an 18-0 edge on faceoffs for the game. CMU's offense also had a 50-28 shots edge overall and 34-10 shots on goal advantage.

It took just 31 seconds for the Mavericks to secure the game's first lead with a goal scored. They led 1-0 and never relinquished despite the fact that the Grizzlies threatened midway through the contest. They pushed the lead to 2-0 with another goal at the 9:33 mark on the clock of the first.

Almost a minutes later, CMU pushed its lead to 3-0 after another goal with 8:37 to play in the opening quarter. Adams State looked to apply pressure on both offense and defense but struggled to get a rhythm going early.

The Grizzlies surrendered two more goals before the five-minute mark of the first and trailed 5-0. It was not until there was 20 seconds left in the opening frame when the Grizzlies finally got on the board. Riley Morrison found the back of the net to cut the score to 5-1 entering the second period.

The second period belong to the Grizzlies as they outscored the Mavericks 2-1 to cut their deficit to three goals, 6-3, going into halftime. The visitors scored in the first 1:30 of play to lead 6-1, but the rest of the period belonged to the home team.

Defense was stout for both squads over the next five minutes of as they held each other without a goal during that span. The Grizzlies ended the drought and scored their first goal of the period with 8:03 to play in the half.

Morrsion scored his second unassisted goal to get the Grizzlies within four of the Mavericks. He answered again with 5:00 to play in the half with his third goal of the game. His offense combined with the Grizzlies tough defense kept the score at 6-3 entering the break.

Despite the score, both teams had 11 turnovers in the first half. Helping CMU hold a two-goal lead was their offense along with a 17-9 groundball lead and an 11-0 faceoff advantage.

Coming out of halftime both teams continued to play well on defense as they each allowed just one goal. Helping CMU stay in front was a 10-6 shots advantage with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal against Adams State.

Jacob Austin scored the final goal of the game for the Grizzlies at the 10:34 mark of the third period. He got by the Mavericks defense on his own merit to score the goal and cut the score to 6-4.

The Mavericks did not take long to respond as they scored their lone goal of the third period 41 seconds later. With just under 10 minutes to play in the third, the visitors led 7-4 and never allowed the home team to score again.

Fast forward to the fourth period, CMU scored its first of three goals with 8:57 on the clock. They added the next two goals with just over six minutes to play in regulation to bring the final score to 10-4. Defense did the rest of the work as they held on for the six-goal win.

Morrison led the Grizzlies attack with a hat trick scoring three goals. Austin had the only other goal to help out the offense. Terry Trudgian led the way in groundballs with four.

Coltyn Kelly and JD Van Arsdall each had two caused turnovers to help the defense. In net, Connor Johnson had a season-high 24 saves.

Four CMU players each scored two goals to lead the team's offense. Joe Wulforst IV was the top point man with four on two goals and two assists. Michael Dasch Jr. has the second most points with three thanks to two goals scored and one assist.

Michael Marino had the most groundballs with 10 and was a clean 18-18 in faceoffs for the game. Vinny Curci led the defense with four caused turnovers. Goalie Nick Wilson tallied six saves in the win for the Mavericks.

The Grizzlies close out regular season play this Sunday, April 28 at home against Westminster College at 12 p.m. They will honor their seven seniors prior to the game.
