ALAMOSA, Colo – Adams State University Baseball and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs begin had their first game of the series at the Adams State Baseball field. Adams State (6-25, 3-14 RMAC) comes into this series off a series sweep against Colorado Mines University. UC at Colorado Springs (19-12, 11-6 RMAC) comes into this series off a series sweep against New Mexico Highlands.
The high scoring affair got started right away as the Mountain Lions scored three runs in the first two innings. Adams State responded quickly with four runs in the third and three more in the fifth. UC at Colorado Springs then pulled ahead as they scored runs in every inning from the fifth inning to the ninth inning. Adams State scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth but were not able to complete the comeback and fell short by a final score of 14-9.
The game started with a home run by Matt Clarke to left field, two batters later Evan Richards hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the second run of the inning.
After a three up three down inning for Adams State, the top of the second started off with another leadoff home run by Michael Bennin to increase the lead to 3-0 for the Mountain Lions.
Adams State got on the board in the bottom of the third with
Josh Billingham at the plate, he crushed a homerun to left field to bring in the first two runs of the game for Adams State.
Nico Nintze continued the scoring later in the inning with a groundout to the first baseman bringing in
Dakota Solis to tie the game at three apiece. The next batter up,
Jared Gay, singled to right center bringing in
Jake Angelopulos. The third inning ended with Adams State in the lead, 4-3.
The fourth inning went quietly for both teams but the fifth inning saw three more runs driven in by UC Colorado Springs. Jake Anderson singled up the middle to bring in the first run, the next batter Evan Richards hit a two run home run to right center and the Mountain Lions took the lead again.
Adams State struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Nico Nintze once again drove in another run, this time with a single through the right side bringing in
Erik Hildebrandt. After a strikeout
Logan Bistrup then singled through the left side to bring Angelopulos home and tie the game again. After
Orlando Romero was hit by a pitch,
Patrick Huffaker reached on a fielder's choice bringing in Nintze and pulling the Grizzlies out front again.
The lead did not last as in the sixth inning after the starter Maldonado was pulled in favor of
Chance Strand. The first batter that Strand faced was Walker Ramsey who hit a two run home run to left field to retake the lead. With two outs Matt Berg doubled to left center to bring in the ninth run of the game for the Mountain Lions.
The next inning the Mountain Lions drove in two more runs in the seventh inning on a suicide squeeze bunt, bringing in two runs on the play.
Adams State continued the streak of not scoring through the seventh and continued to fall behind as UC Colorado Springs brought two more runs across the plate in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly by Evan Richards and then a wild pitch which allowed Matt Berg to score.
The scoring continued for the Mountain Lions in the ninth as the fourteenth run of the game on a dropped third strike as a runner scored from third.
The bottom of the ninth was the last chance for Adams State as after two straight hits by Nintze and Gay,
Logan Bistrup came to the plate and doubled to left center to bring in both runs and bring Adams State back into the game. The game ended on a double play and secured the win for UC Colorado Springs.
Logan Bistrup led the team with three hits and three RBI,
Nico Nintze also had three hits and two RBI and two runs scored.
Josh Billingham showed promising power with his first home run of the year.
David Maldonado started the game and threw 5.1 innings while only allowing seven hits and getting one strikeout.
Chance Strand too the loss throwing only 0.1 innings but allowing two runs and falling to 0-2 on the season.
Evan Richards continued his fantastic season with three hits, four RBI, two runs scored, and a home run. Matt Berg also had three hits and three runs scored.
Jonathan Cowles started the game and went 7.0 innings with three strikeouts and got the win to move to 3-6 on the season.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow for a double header, the first pitch will be at 12 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
