PUEBLO, Colo. – Adams State Softball takes one of two in today's double header from the Thunderwolves. CSU-Pueblo took game one 13-5, as the Grizzlies won the closer, 7-2.
The Grizzlies move to 7-30 overall, and 7-18 in conference play. The Thunderwolves are now 9-21 overall and 8-18 in RMAC.
In game one, the Thunderwolves were the first to reach the board in the bottom of the second inning. With a lead-off walk, CSU-Pueblo homered to center field, giving them the 2-0 lead.
The Grizzlies got one back in the top of the third.
Samantha McDonald reached on an error by the catcher, then stole second.
Brittany Phillips singled through the left side, scoring McDonald. The Thunderwolves responded in the bottom half of the inning, hitting another two-run homerun to right field, extending their lead, 4-1.
Adams State added another tally to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.
Rebecca Wood doubled to right center, then advanced to third from a single by
Kenzie Lange.
Zoe Munn brought Wood in with a single through the left side. The Grizzlies now trailed by two.
The Thunderwolves responded with a lead-off homerun to right center, making it 5-2. After letting up a walk and a single up the middle, CSU-Pueblo doubled down the left field line to score one. The Thunderwolves continued their rally from a two-run base hit, and another two-run homerun. The Thunderwolves led 10-2 going in to the top of the fifth.
Adams State opened with a lead-off walk from Rocha, and then advanced to second from Phillip's single up the middle.
Baylie Fryar singled to third base, which loaded the bases for
Shelby Haskins. Three runs scored from Haskins base clearing double down the right field line. The Grizzlies trailed by five moving to the bottom half of the fifth inning.
CSU-Pueblo added three more on to their score from one hit through the left side, and multiple Grizzly errors. The game ended at the completion of the fifth inning, 13-5.
As the designated player, Phillips went 2-3 from the plate, with one RBI. Haskins went 1-1 with 3 RBI's on her double.
The Grizzlies took the reigns in game two, with
Jade Garbiso getting her third win of the season (3-15). With a slow couple of opening innings, the Grizzlies got on to the scoreboard at the top of the third inning.
Mercedes Salazar opened the third inning with a lead-off single up the middle. Advancing Salazar, Rocha singled to third base. On a fielder's choice, Salazar was out at third, but runners remained at first and second.
Shelby Haskins singled to center to load the bases for Fryar. The Grizzlies scored two off of the double by Fryar. The rally continued with
Sarah Hansen's base hit to left center, which scored Haskins. Wood added on to the score with a three-run homerun to left field. The Grizzlies led the Thunderwolves 6-0.
The Grizzlies kept their lead through the sixth, and at the top of the seventh added on one more run. Garbiso reached on an error by the centerfielder, and advanced to third. McDonald hit a sac fly to left field to extend the Grizzly lead 7-0.
The Thunderwolves tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, leading off with a homerun to left center. CSU-Pueblo added one more tally to their final score at the end of the inning, closing the game 7-2.
The Grizzlies broke their nine-game losing streak. Haskins led the Grizzlies going 3-3 on the day with three RBIs.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on Saturday April 13 with a doubleheader in Las Vegas, New Mexico against New Mexico Highlands
