Salt Lake City, UT. – The Adam's State Men's Lacrosse team fought against the best in their conference, Westminster College, for a Sunday afternoon matchup that resulted in a tough battle that the Grizzlies unfortunately lost. They now sit at an overall record of 0-2, as well as a conference record of 0-2.
In the first quarter of the game, the Griffins went on a bit of a run to take an early lead.
Connor Kuykendall did what he could at the face-off X, battling and winning a few for his team. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies came out of the first quarter trailing 0-9.
Kuykendall kicked off the 2
nd quarter with a win at X, allowing his offense to get a look at the goal. A shot off the post allowed the Griffins to get the ball and score, but the Grizzlies offense bounced back soon thereafter.
Johnny Rosas, who led the unit last game, put one in the back of the net to get his team on the board. Quick to follow was
Jacob Austin scoring off a good clear from
Brendan Williams. Rolling, the Grizzlies kept the pressure on and one of their long-poles, Terry Trudigans, scored his first of the season. Freshman Middie,
Tim Crouse, scored his first collegiate goal in the last 3 minutes of the game off a Nick Slefridge assist.
Going into the 3
rd quarter, the Grizzlies were down 4-15, but prepared to upset the Griffins. Quick to go to work, Trudigan caused a turnover that allowed
Kyle Butler to get the ball and feed it to Rosas, who was quick to put it past Westminster's goalie. Offense continued to battle, their shots barely missing, but Westminster's offense was loud. The 3
rd quarter came to a close with the score at 5-20.
Austin kicked off the 4
th quarter, striking again and putting one via an assist from
Alexander Kelly. The Griffins countered with a goal of their own, but Crouse struck again tallying an unassisted goal. Only a minute later, Butler scored a goal to try to cut the deficit the Grizzlies were trailing by. With less than a minute left in the game, Crouse scored again to earn himself a hattrick for the game. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies still fell to Westminster 9-22.
The Grizzlies put 23 shots on, 16 of those shots being on goal. In addition, the offense was 1 for 3 in man-up opportunities, capitalizing on the chances given. The Grizzlies won 12 faceoffs, FOGOs bouncing back from the Colorado Mesa game. Defense and offense combined for 35 groundballs, 5 caused turnovers, and went 13 for 21 on clears. Williams had 19 saves on the day, playing in cage for the full 60. The Grizzly goalie also led his team today in ground balls with 7.
The Grizzlies, despite losing, still played well against the lethal Griffins. Adam's State Men's Lacrosse will have a week to recuperate and learn from the weekend before their next few games. The Grizzlies will hit the field again for their home opener against Otterbein University on March 2
