Grizzlies Split Day One Doubleheader with Yellow Jackets

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Softball gets first RMAC win in today's doubleheader against Black Hills State. The Grizzlies bats were on fire today, connecting with 24 hits and 13 runs on the day. The Grizzlies took game one over the Yellow Jackets 6-1, and fell in a walk-off battle in game two, 7-9.
 
Due to the site change, Black Hills State remained the home team, even though playing at the Grizzlies home field.
 
Game One
Adams State started on a high note defensively with Jade Garbiso in the circle. The Yellow Jackets opened the bottom of the first with a single to center field. With a man on first, catcher, Hannah Wirtjes had a perfect throw to catch the runner stealing at second. Garbiso finished the inning up with two strikeouts. Moving to the top of the second, Shelby Haskins got the inning started with a leadoff single to left field. Maya Ramos-Moreno joined Haskins on base, and both were advanced by a sac bunt by Sydney Muniz. Garbiso got the Grizzlies on the board with a single to center to score Moreno and Haskins.
 
The Grizzlies finished out the bottom of the second leading 2-0 and only allowed one baserunner. Tyler Hays opened the top of the third with a double to the left side. After being advanced to third base from a sacfly by Breck Smith, Haskins doubled to deep left to score Hays. The Grizzlies led 3-0 through the bottom of the fourth.
 
Adams State extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Haskins again got the Grizzlies started after being hit by a pitch. Bailey Reid pinch ran for Haskins and was advanced to third by Moreno's bunt single. Muniz came up with a big 2 RBI double down the left field line. With two out, Samantha McDonald reached on an error in the infield to score Muniz. The Grizzlies ended the top of the fifth leading 6-0. Black Hills State responded in the bottom half of the inning with a double to center field. After advancing on a passed ball, the Yellow Jacket made it home from a single down the left field line. Black Hills State trailed 6-1 moving into the top of the sixth.
 
The Yellow Jacket defense battled in the top of the sixth, allowing three Grizzly hits, but escaped the inning with the bases loaded for Adams State. The Grizzlies held on to the lead and did not allow another hit to close the game winning 6-1.
 
Tyler Hays led the Grizzlies on the day, going 3-4 with two doubled and a triple in the game. Muniz and Garbiso each collected two RBIs with Muniz going 2-3 and Garbiso 2-4. In the circle, Garbiso secured her second win of the season, pitching a complete game while only allowing one run and faced 23 at bats.
 
Game Two
The Grizzlies continued their momentum into the top of the first of game two. Samantha McDonald led the inning off with an inside the park homerun. Alyssa Castaneda followed up with a single to left center. Haskins joined in on the momentum, crushing a two-run homerun to right field. The Grizzlies led 3-0 to close the top half of the inning.
 
Taylor Sandoval started in the circle for the Grizzles forcing a 1, 2, 3 bottom of the first inning. Sandoval maintained her momentum in the bottom of the second with another three up, three down inning. Adams State tacked on another run in the top of the third. With two outs, Haskins earned a walk. Analiese Rodriguez followed up with a single to right field and advanced Haskins to third. Moreno came through with an RBI single to right center to score Haskins.
 
Black Hills earned their first hit in the bottom of the third with a leadoff single to left center. Adams State played some solid defense to close the inning. Adams State continued to play good defense in the bottom of the fourth, only allowing one hit.
 
The Grizzlies tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Hays got aboard with a single to left and was joined by Haskins from a walk. Haskins and Hays scored from a two RBI triple to left center. Leading 6-0 into the bottom of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets responded with a solo homerun to get on the board. Black Hills bats started heating up in the bottom of the sixth. The Yellow Jackets led off with a single to center. After a walk, Black Hills earned their second run from a single to left field. With two aboard, The Yellow Jackets doubled up the middle to cut the difference to three.
 
Adams State bounced back in the top of the seventh. Hays reached on an error by the first basemen and advanced all the way home as the ball rolled into the right field corner. The Grizzlies followed up with two hits from Haskins and Moreno. The Black Hills State defense held out, not allowing the Grizzlies to score another run.
 
Black Hills State rallied in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double. After a single through the middle, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases from a walk. Black Hills State hit a three-run triple to cut the Grizzly lead to one. The Yellow Jackets scored the tying run from a single to center field. Black Hills followed up with the walk-off two-run homerun to left, winning 7-9 over the Grizzlies.
 
Haskins led the Grizzlies in game two, going 2-2 with two walks and two RBIs. Moreno was also a big hitter for the Grizzlies, going 3-4 with three RBIs. In the circle, Sandoval completed six innings for the Grizzlies, facing 26 batters.
 
The Grizzlies will be back out on the field tomorrow to take on Black Hills State in another set of doubleheaders to close their four-game series.
