ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Adams State Grizzlies Baseball team was swept in their weekend series on the road against conference opponent Dixie State University, after Sunday's 8-1 loss. The series was the Grizzlies' first RMAC series of the season, and the sweep brings them down to 0-4 in conference play.
Pitcher
Troy Gutbub got the start for the Grizzlies in the fourth and final game of the series, and undoubtedly had the best performance out of any Grizzly pitcher on the weekend, as he gave up just three hits and one earned run in five complete innings of work, striking out four batters in a solid overall performance. Unfortunately for Gutbub and as has been the case in the last few games for the Grizzlies, his offense was unable to generate any run support to reward his impressive outing.
The Grizzlies managed just one run on seven hits in the ball game, as they were unable to capitalize with men on base. Their lone run came in the sixth inning, when
Chase Dixon singled to left field to drive in Jake Angelopulous, for what was, at the time an incredibly meaningful run that kept the Grizzlies in the ballgame as they trailed just 2-1 headed to the bottom half of the inning. The Grizzlies had momentum, and hoped that their bullpen could keep the game close for them to make a rally late.
Lucas Bufmack came into relieve Gutbub in the bottom half of the sixth inning, and gave up two unearned runs to start the frame.
Chance Strand came in the next inning after the Grizzlies were unable to do anything in their half of the seventh, and gave up two more runs in his one inning of work, which made the score 6-1 in the eighth.
Jamison Fuentes and
Dominic Lomeli were the final Grizzly pitchers to come out of the pen, and each gave up one run to make the score 8-1. With no miracle late inning rally in them, the Grizzlies fell 8-1.
The Grizzlies hope that moving forward, they will be able to provide their starting pitching with better run support, especially when they have great performances like
Troy Gutbub's on Sunday. Gutbub was ultimately credited with the loss, dropping his record to 1-3, even in a good performance. The Grizzlies look to regroup and get ready to host Colorado Christian next weekend in Alamosa.
