FB| Yellow Jackets down Grizzlies in double overtime

SPEARFISH, S.D.—Despite leading by 21 points at the half, the Adams State University football team could not escape Lyle Hare Stadium with their  first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as Black Hills State pulled out a 51-48 double overtime win over the Grizzlies on their homecoming. 24-3 win on Saturday afternoon to spoil the Yellow Jackets homecoming.

The game started ominously for Adams State as they bobbled the opening kickoff at the goal line and quickly were forced to punt the ball. After a one-play first down, the Yellow Jackets looked like it was going to be all Black Hills State. Bryce Hampton changed the Grizzly fates as for the second straight week he came away with an interception and gave the ball to the Grizzlies deep inside the offensive territory.

Adams State then ran seven plays for 16 yards and settled for a 38-yard field goal by Zachary Survillas.

On the ensuing run, Matthew Collier took two quick carries down the field for 30 yards. Adams State's defense was able to stop a 9-play 59-yard drive and forced a field goal. The first attempt from 33 yards was no good but a running into the kicker penalty was called on the Grizzlies and the 28-yard field goal that ensued was good to tie the game at three.

On the next drive, Adams State got two big runs to start the drive, however, two holding penalties set up a third-and-22. Starting quarterback John Buska scampered 27 yards to convert for a first down.  A couple of plays later, Buska was able to fake out the defense with a 33-yard quarterback scurry up the middle to give the Grizzlies a 10-3 lead with 3:42 showing on the clock. The drive took 3:26 off the clock and was 11 plays for 80 yards.

Adams State's defense then flexed as Deon Meyers picked up a loose ball and flew down to the 12-yardline inside the redzone. Tyreik Campbell then scampered the remaining 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage to make the score 17-3 after one quarter.

The second quarter saw the Grizzlies continue their dominance as they forced the Yellow Jackets to punt. The punt went out of bounds at the one-yard line and Adams State had their backs pressed against their own end zone. Adams State, however, steamrolled down the field and capped off a 10-play, 99-yard drive as Buska dove in from one yard out.

Trailing by 21 entering the second half, Black Hills State cut the lead to two possessions as they capped off a five-play 71-yard drive before Chance Eben had a two-yard touchdown drive in 1:48.

The Yellow Jackets then scored 14 points to cut the lead down to 24-17 before Aidan Willard pulled down an interception that was returned to the endzone, however, a holding penalty at the spot of the interception nullified the touchdown.

Tyreik Campbell cut the momentum as he scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 11 yards out and finished off an eight-play 87-yard drive to make the score 31-17 with nine seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Matthew Collier capped off a five-play 75-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown with 13:10 remaining to make the score 31-24.

Adams State quickly retaliated with a three-play 75-yard touchdown as Buska connected with Ian Fryday for a 63-yard strike over the middle. He was tripped up at the one-yardline but Buska capped off the drive with a little flick to Fryday for the touchdown and grew the lead to 38-14 with 12:14 remaining.

With 9:19 showing in the clock, the Yellow Jackets scored another touchdown that was a 36-yarder but failed to hit the PAT and trailed by eight, 38-30. Adams State had an opportunity to keep a two-possession game, however a field goal attempt was blocked and Black Hills took possession.

The Yellow Jackets drove down the field and capped off a 12-play 76-yard drive with a one yard touchdown before cashing in on a 2-point conversion to tie the game with 1:41 remaining.

Adams State then went on a three-and-out and were forced to punt the ball.

Both teams were able to reach pay dirt in the first overtime but Adams State was only able to get a field goal in the second while the Yellow Jackets were able to convert on a third down and score the game winning touchdown.

Offensively, senior quarterback John Buska was the catalyst for Adams State as he was responsible for 429 yards. He completed 19-of-35 passes for 320 yards including a 63-yard strike to Ian Fryday and one touchdown while carrying the ball ten times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Braeden Meyer had ten tackles on the day including eight solo tackles and two for loss.
