WSOC | Grizzlies hold off St. Edwards for first win of 2021

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Soccer team continued their opening week by playing St. Edward's. The Grizzlies finished on top, as the final score was 2-1.

"I'm beyond proud of this group and the way they responded to adversity throughout this trip," said Head Coach Colin Baker. "It's not easy playing two teams that are regulars in the national tournament every year, but we were prepared, there for one another, and executed every detail."

Adams States found the back of the net first as Carena Harrison scored in the 21st minute.

"The first goal, Karlee did a great job of exploiting the pocket they gave us and was able to turn and do what she does best with her vision," noted Coach Baker. "Carena was proactive and exploited the wide channel they gave us early and she was able to finish it off herself. There's nobody better than her going 1v1 with pace and creating chances."

This lead, however, did not last as St. Edward's quickly scored after. After going back and forth in the first half, Madison Hagerty scored in the 39th minute. This put the Grizzlies up 2-1.

In the second half, St. Edward's was very aggressive as they had seven shots on goal, five corner kicks, and eight fouls. The Grizzlies had one shot on goal, one corner kick, and one foul. Adams State was able to hold onto the win despite the aggressive play by both sides.

"Second goal, Karlee sent in a great ball from the corner kick and we fought for it. Mads was perfectly positioned and challenged the second ball that came to her and put it away," noted Baker. "I'm so happy to see her continue to grow and for her to get her first collegiate goal."

In the 38th minute Sydney Wiedeman received a yellow card and then in the 90th minute Carena Harrison received one as well.

"Last part of the game, St. Ed's did a great job of pressing high and making it difficult for us by going direct and fighting for the ball, Baker explained. "But our team held their nerve, stood strong, and saw the game out together."

The Grizzlies walked away with their first victory of the season. Up next, the Grizzlies travel to Lubbock, Texas to play Lubbock Christian University on Thursday, September 9th, at 7:00 p.m.
