LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- Chase Hiatt's scoring fly ball in the eighth inning, and an RBI double from Ethan Abegg helped Adams State to a come-from-behind, 14-10 win at New Mexico Highlands March 24 at Brandt Baseball Field.
ASU improved to 7-19, 2-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Highlands fell to 1-22 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Joseph Raker and Matt Bathauer started the eighth-inning rally with singles. After an infield out, Hiatt's fly ball brought home Raker with the go-ahead run, and Abegg's double brought home Matt Bathauer. He and Jack Dere added insurance RBI singles in the top of the ninth.
Highlands' last chance was in the last of the eighth. The Cowboys loaded the bases with two outs. But Kamden Kautz, ASU's third pitcher of the game and the eventual winning pitcher, got Fabian Ferreira to fly out to end the threat.Â
Things started strong for the Grizzlies. They scored nine runs in their first four turns to the plate. ASU used six hits to score their first four runs in the opening frame. Paul Giglio, who doubled to start the game, rode home on Tauscher's single. After a Mike Bathauer base hit put runners on first and third. Raker doubled to right field to score Tauscher. Bathauer's brother, Matt, doubled home Raker and Mike Bathauer.
The third-inning rally -- four runs' worth -- began with Jack Dere's single. Hiatt doubled down the left field line to send Dere to third. Dere wound up scoring on a passed ball, and Hiatt moved to third on the same play. Ethan Abegg doubled home Hiatt. An error allowed Ryan Downs to reach safely, and Giglio's grounder scored Downs to close out the rally.
Highlands rallied to take a 10-9 lead, The main contribution was a grand-slam home run off the bat of Taigo Sato, part of an eight-run fifth. NMHU also picked up two runs on bases-loaded walks. Alex Admire added an RBI single. ASU rallied to tie the score at 10 in the seventh inning, thanks to Tauscher's infield grounder.
Raker, Matt Bathauer and Dere had three hits for ASU. Tauscher and Dere had two base hits for ASU. Bathauer and Abegg drove in three runs, while Tauscher drove in a pair.Â
Sato and Joseph Romero finished with three hits for NMHU. Sato also drove in five of the Cowboys' runs. Romero and Chase Stewart drove in two runs apiece.
The two teams resume their weekend series with two, seven-inning games Saturday, March 25. First pitch for the opener is set for noon at Brandt Field.
