ALAMOSA, Colo. – Junior
Tyler Hubbard made his first goal of the game count in a big way, scoring with just :07 left in regulation to break an 8-all tie to give Adams State a thrilling 9-8 win over visiting Colorado State Pueblo this afternoon at the ASU Lacrosse Field for the Grizzlies' first league win of the year.
ASU improves to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the RMAC, with CSU-P falling to 1-11, 1-4 RMAC.
The win snapped a ten-game losing streak to the ThunderWolves that dates back to March 4, 2017 when the Grizzlies won 12-9.
"I don't know how to feel or really what to say at the moment. But all the credit definitely goes to everyone on my team. They battled hard and stuck with the game plan for 60 minutes," Said Head Coach
Jerome Austin. "It's been a long time coming and rebuilding here for five years."
The hosts took a 3-2 lead after one period of play, courtesy of unassisted goals by
Dawson Balabanoff,
Kris Owens, and
Travis Brave Heart, the latter coming via an
Andrew Guerrero feed.
CSU-P tied the match in the next period with a pair of goals compared to just one for ASU, courtesy of Balabanoff.
Balabanoff continued his offensive surge after the break, scoring the first goal of the third period to retake the lead, before the Thunderwolves knotted the contest less than two minutes later.
ASU's Guerrero, however, scored at the 6:32 mark to give the hosts the lead again, and after CSU-P tied the contest two minutes later,
Daniell Joy tallied the tie-breaker with just 23 ticks left in the frame to provide a harbinger of things to come.
In the final period, the Thunderwolves equalized on their extra-man advantage at the 6:13 mark, only to have
Chase Roush answer four minutes later to break the deadlock.
With less than a minute to play, CSU-P looked to send the game into overtime with a goal at the 59 second mark, but ASU had the final say after Hubbard took a Joy feed 52 seconds later and found the back of the net for the game winner.
In a match that was statistically even, ASU tallied a 21-20 advantage on shots and won 11 of 19 face offs.
ASU takes to the road on Friday, traveling to Westminster College for a 7 pm start.
