GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Despite taking a 5-0 lead after the first inning and a half, the Adams State University baseball squad was unable to keep the floodgates from opening as the No. 2 ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks earned a 17-5 win on Thursday night at Suplizio Field.

The Grizzlies opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Despite a strikeout, an error and a single set up the tee for
Mike Bathauer to nail the first pitch he saw to left field for a 3-0 lead.

The second inning saw Bathauer single to left field to score two runs for the 5-0 lead before the Mavericks scored their 17 runs over the next three innings including an explosion of 12 runs with two outs in the bottom of the third. The Mavericks also slugged out 16 hits including eight extra base-hits.

In all the Grizzlies had six hits in the game.

The Mavericks and Grizzlies will continue their series with a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
