FB | Grizzlies Defeat Oaklanders for first season-opening win since 2014

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State University Grizzly Football team was able to open the 2023 season in victorious fashion on Saturday night here in side Rex Stadium. The Grizzlies capitalized on three fourth quarter touchdowns to get their first home-opening win since 2014 as they defeated the Lincoln Oaklanders 35-16.

The Grizzlies out-gained the Oaklanders 440 yards to 347 as they out passed Lincoln 240-128 yards despite having to go through three quarterbacks due to injury.

The Grizzlies scored on their first possession with Zachary Survillas drilled a field goal after Daylen Boddie rushed to the middle for 1-yard to the touchdown score to make the score 7-7 after the first frame.

In the second quarter, Montana Neustadter completed a pass to Kentrell Petite as he went for a 10-yard touchdown. Survillas' kick attempt was good giving the Grizzlies a lead of 14-7.  ASU drove 13 plays, 81 yards in 4:15. The Oaklanders attempted a field goal to tie the game but with the clock running out of time the Grizzlies headed into halftime with a lead.

The Grizzlies ended the third quarter with Boddie rushing to the middle for 5-yards, with the Grizzlies holding off the Oaklanders going into the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies shut down the Oaklanders in the fourth quarter with third-string quarterback Connor Underhill making a right pass to Aaron Johnson who went for 65-yards to complete a touchdown. Survillas' kick attempt was good setting the score 21-10 with ASU's lead gradually increasing.

Boddie rushed down the middle for 1-yard to make another touchdown, followed by Survillas with a good attempt to kick. The Grizzlies keep this momentum going as Rasheed Rankin capped off the game by rushing down the middle to make a touchdown, and ASU won the game with a 19-point lead over Lincoln University.

The Grizzlies will travel to Canyon, Texas as they will compete at the Buffalo Stadium against West Texas A&M University on Sep. 9th with the game scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
