Colorado Springs, Colo. -- Adams State baseball dropped both games of their doubleheader Saturday, falling 13-6 to UCCS in the opener before a 19-10 loss to Colorado Mines in the afternoon matchup.
In the first game against UCCS, the Mountain Lions jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth. The Grizzlies were held scoreless through four frames before breaking through in the fifth, when Macs Carrillo hit an RBI single to right filed to bring in Nolan Marthaler.
Adams State added two more runs in the sixth when Christian Altamirano blasted a two-run home run to left field scoring Josiah Hall, who reached on a hit-by-pitch. The Grizzlies showed life in the ninth inning with a three-run rally, including a pinch-hit RBI double from Braden Watkins, but the comeback fell short as UCCS's bullpen secured the final outs.
On the mound, Adams State starter Cesar Loma battled through five innings, while the bullpen worked to limit the Mountain Lions' 20-hit offensive attack.
The Grizzlies carried their offensive energy into the second game against Colorado Mines, but the Orediggers' bats proved too much. Mines plated six runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take a commanding lead. Adams State responded in the fifth, when Jorden Rico launched a three-run home run to cut into the deficit.
Despite the late offensive surge, Colorado Mines' relentless attack, which included 20 hits, three home runs and six doubles, kept the Grizzlies at bay. Adams State managed 10 hits of their own while drawing six walks but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
The Grizzlies will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. next weekend and face off against St. Cloud State University for a four game series.
