Pueblo, Colorado — In the series finale against Colorado Pueblo, Adams State suffered a tough loss by a final score of 19-3. This defeat leaves the Grizzlies with a record of 17-29 (13-15 RMAC).
In today's game, the Thunderwolves came out swinging early and often, tallying 19 runs against the Grizzlies' pitching staff. On the mound, the Grizzlies struggled to limit the Thunderwolves' scoring, as the Colorado Pueblo offense successfully scored in 4 of the 6 innings they batted, netting 3 crooked innings during that span, including a 10-run inning in the 4th. Pueblo amassed 21 hits throughout the game, including 3 doubles and 4 home runs. Despite Colorado Pueblo's impressive hitting, the Grizzly defense did themselves no favors, struggling with routine plays that extended innings that should have ended much earlier.
Payton Brown's 1-2-3 inning in the fifth was the one highlight on the mound. Brown pitched exceptionally well, executing his pitches effectively, making quick work of the fifth inning as he needed only 12 pitches to secure his three outs.
Joseph Marek,
Tyler Smith, Tyler Addington, and
Cory Apker also pitched for the Grizzlies, with Marek starting on the mound for Adams. Marek, unfortunately, encountered trouble early, limiting him to just 1 ⅔ innings. Marek finished with a line of 1 ⅔ innings, 7 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks, and 1 strikeout. Smith, Addington, and Apker combined to pitch the remaining 4 innings, giving up 14 hits, 12 runs, 1 walk, and garnering 3 strikeouts.
Offensively, the Grizzlies struggled as they were held hitless by the Colorado Pueblo starter for the first 4 innings until
Phil Carter ended the no-hitter with a solo home run to dead center. Carter's home run gave the Grizzly offense a spark, as they hit 2 more home runs in the inning, resulting in a 3-run fifth. The other home runs were hit by
Chris Gracia, his first of the year, and
Christian Altamirano, his fifth. Carter's home run marked his fourteenth of the year. Aside from the 3 home runs, the Grizzly offense struggled to find any rhythm, recording just 3 other hits and 5 baserunners throughout the day. The 3 additional hits came from Carter, who finished the day 2 for 3, as well as
Braden Watkins and
Josiah Hall.
The Grizzlies will look to bounce back next weekend after a tough series sweep against Colorado Pueblo. They will get the chance to do so against Regis next weekend in their final home series of the year. The series will begin on Thursday, May 1st, at 3 PM MST at the Grizzlies' home field in Alamosa. As well, with the series being the Grizzlies' final home series, it will also be Senior weekend, with Senior festivities being held on Friday, May 2nd. Senior festivities will happen in between games on Friday, recognizing the 15 outstanding Seniors the Grizzlies have and all they have done for the Adams State program.
