Grand Junction, Colorado — In the final game of the series against Colorado Mesa, the Grizzlies fell 12-6. By dropping the four-game series, Adams State fell to 13-25 (9-11 RMAC).
Early in the game, the Mavericks jumped out to a quick lead over the Grizzlies. Scoring 1 run in the first and 7 in the second, Colorado Mesa took an early 8-0 lead, which allowed them to secure a game four win and complete the series sweep. During the first two innings, the Mavericks capitalized on poor defense by the Grizzlies, as Adams State committed two costly errors that resulted in a total of 3 extra runs in the second inning. After the second inning, the Grizzlies managed to halt the Mavericks' scoring and added a few runs themselves, outscoring the Mavericks 6-4 from the third to the ninth inning.
Starting for the Grizzlies was freshman
Joseph Marek. Marek's final line showed 3 ⅔ innings pitched, 6 hits, 9 runs (6 earned), 7 walks, 1 hit batter, and 1 strikeout. One inning proved detrimental for Marek, as he collected the loss and finished the season at 3-2. In the final 4 ⅓ innings, the Grizzlies surrendered only 3 runs to the Mavericks, with
Phil Carter,
Justin Arellano, and Tyler Addington coming out of the bullpen strong to keep the Grizzlies in the game. Carter's final line consisted of 2 ⅓ innings pitched, 4 hits, 2 runs, and zero walks. Arellano followed with 1 inning, allowing 3 hits and 1 run while walking none. Finally, Addington finished the game for the Grizzlies with an impressive outing, retiring the side on 10 pitches while collecting 1 strikeout.
Offensively, the Grizzlies struggled early but found success late in the game, scoring all 6 of their runs in the final 3 innings. A standout player for the Grizzlies was
Seth Reker, who finished the game 3 for 5 with a home run, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Reker's home run was his third of the year, and his 3 RBIs brought him to a total of 22 for the year.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies will have a bye week this upcoming weekend and will return in two weeks to face New Mexico Highlands at home. The series will again consist of four games, starting on Friday, April 18th, at 3 PM MST. Friday's game will be followed by a doubleheader on Saturday and a final game of the series on Sunday. Adams State aims to bounce back after a tough weekend against Colorado Mesa in two weeks, maintaining hopes in the playoff hunt.
