Grand Junction, Colo. — Adams State baseball opened its RMAC Tournament run with a tough loss Wednesday night, falling 17-2 to No. 2 seed Regis at The Diamond. Despite flashes of solid play, the Grizzlies struggled to contain a red-hot Ranger offense and now face a win-or-go-home scenario Thursday morning.
Regis used a pair of big innings to seize early control, scoring five runs in the third and adding six more in the fourth. Adams State's pitching staff had trouble finding rhythm against a Regis lineup that racked up 17 hits, including five doubles and two home runs.
Senior Phil Carter was a lone offensive highlight for the Grizzlies. The designated hitter launched a solo home run in the sixth inning — his 17th long ball of the season — and finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Carter's blast was one of just three hits for Adams State in the contest.
Junior Christian Altamirano reached base three times, drawing two walks and being hit by a pitch. He came around to score the team's second run in the top of the ninth after a pair of wild pitches moved him into scoring position.
On the mound, senior Brian Walters was tagged for seven earned runs over three innings and was charged with the loss. Sophomore Justin Arellano entered in relief in the fourth but was unable to stop the bleeding, allowing five runs without recording an out. Senior Payton Brown stepped in and stabilized the game, tossing three innings and allowing just four hits. Juniors Alex Hernandez and Cory Apker pitched the final two innings for the Grizzlies.
Defensively, Adams State played a clean game with no errors and turned a double play in the early innings. Despite the lopsided score, the team continued to compete and will look to bounce back quickly.
With the loss, Adams State falls to 17-34 on the year. The Grizzlies head into an elimination game against UCCS on Thursday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at The Diamond. A win would keep Adams State alive in the double-elimination bracket, while a loss would end the season.
