Amezcua’s 16 Saves Lead Grizzlies Against UCCS

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Bryan Amezcua kept Adams State within striking distance Sunday, making 16 saves as the Grizzlies battled No. 14 UCCS at the ASU Soccer & Lacrosse Field. The Mountain Lions scored in each half to claim a 2–0 victory, adding their second goal on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute.

Amezcua recorded eight saves in each half and helped keep the deficit at one goal for more than 61 minutes after UCCS opened the scoring. Kaidin Reese led the Grizzlies with two shots, both on goal.

Adams State tested the Mountain Lions early. Ethan Padgett put a shot on target in the 11th minute, but UCCS goalkeeper Hugo Sjoberg made the save. At the other end, Amezcua stopped three shots in the opening 19 minutes before Eduardo Macias broke through at 20:05. Toby Benitez and Marcus Garcia assisted on the goal.

The Grizzlies continued to look for an equalizer while Amezcua turned away the Mountain Lions' attack. Reese forced a save in the 33rd minute, and Andy Pablo sent a shot wide two minutes later. Amezcua added five saves after the opening goal, including three in the final eight minutes of the half. Reese put another shot on frame just before the break, but Adams State entered halftime trailing 1–0.

Amezcua carried that effort into the second half. He stopped three shots in a span of less than a minute, denying Macias twice before saving Benitez's attempt at 55:37. Those stops preserved the one-goal margin as Adams State earned corner kicks in the 64th and 74th minutes.

UCCS extended its lead at 81:11 when Yohann Fila converted a penalty kick. The Grizzlies answered with shots from Douglas Cutshall and Jonathan Vazquez-Morales, but neither found the target. Amezcua added two more saves in the closing minutes to finish with 16.

Adams State totaled six shots, including three on goal, and two corner kicks. The Grizzlies moved to 1–10–1 overall and 0–6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
