Grizzlies Fall to Fort Lewis

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Adams State University women's soccer outshot Fort Lewis College, but two early goals lifted the Skyhawks to a 3-1 win Sunday at the ASU Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Grizzlies finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots and placed eight attempts on goal. Keira Robertson led Adams State with five shots, three shots on goal, and her fourth goal of the season.

Lorena Vargas-Galvan added four shots and placed two on goal. Denali Levin recorded three shots, including an attempt that hit the crossbar early in the second half.

Adams State created the first two shots on goal. Vargas-Galvan tested Fort Lewis goalkeeper Trinity Lujan in the 11th and 13th minutes.

Fort Lewis broke through in the 19th minute when Maleia Dayao scored the opening goal. Dayao struck again in the 21st minute off assists from Ann Spence and Kiana Jamerson to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.

The Grizzlies continued to attack and produced nine shots in the opening half. Robertson, Lauren Ocampo, Vargas-Galvan, and Shay Norden each placed attempts on goal before halftime.

Adams State pushed forward after the break. Levin hit the crossbar in the 51st minute, while Aja Lister followed with two attempts during the next three minutes.

Emma Gurule extended the Fort Lewis lead to 3-0 in the 83rd minute. Robertson answered 74 seconds later with an unassisted goal to put Adams State on the board.

The Grizzlies created two more scoring chances in the closing minutes. Levin and Robertson each forced saves from Lujan, who finished with seven stops.

Adams State moves to 5-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in RMAC play. Fort Lewis improves to 7-2-2 overall and 4-2-0 in conference action.
