Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State overcame a seven-run deficit and scored five runs in the seventh inning to secure its first RMAC win of the season, defeating Black Hills State 11-9 on Sunday at Holy Family Softball Field.
The Grizzlies (1-9, 1-0 RMAC) struck first in the opening inning. Jayde Garcia led off with a single before Emily Sauvageau doubled to center to bring her home. Later in the frame, Ali Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to score Kaylee Eyl for a 2-0 lead.
Black Hills State responded with a six-run third inning on seven hits and added two more runs in the fourth to extend the advantage to 9-2.
Adams State began its comeback in the fifth. Davis delivered an RBI single, Brylyn Haddick drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Devree Godinez added an RBI single to trim the deficit to 9-5. Davis added her second sacrifice fly of the game in the sixth to make it 9-6.
The seventh inning proved decisive. Denae Ojeda led off with a triple and scored on an infield single by Godinez. The Grizzlies capitalized on two Black Hills State errors to tie the game before Davis lined an RBI single to center to give Adams State its first lead since the opening inning. Haddick followed with an RBI single for an insurance run.
Aubree Davis earned the win in relief, allowing two runs on two hits over 4.1 innings while striking out three. She held the Yellow Jackets scoreless over the final three frames to seal the comeback.
Sauvageau and Caylie Eiguren each recorded three hits, while Davis finished with four RBIs as Adams State tallied 16 hits in the victory.
Adams State will resume Sunday's second game Monday at 10 a.m., followed by the originally scheduled doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
