DURANGO, Colo. — Adams State women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Fort Lewis at Dirks Field. The loss moved the Grizzlies to 4-1-1 on the season, while Fort Lewis improved to 3-0-2.
Fort Lewis controlled much of the early attack, but goalkeeper Kena Keyes kept the Grizzlies level with saves in the sixth and 24th minutes. The Skyhawks eventually broke through in the 31st minute when Kadyn Begay scored off an assist from Addyson Carpentier, giving Fort Lewis a 1-0 advantage.
Adams State looked for an answer before halftime. The Grizzlies earned three corners in the opening 45 minutes, while Yarelis Dedos-Pino and Sophia Miera each recorded a shot. Fort Lewis carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
Mariely Jimenez entered in goal for Adams State to begin the second half and made a save less than three minutes into the period. Fort Lewis extended its lead in the 59th minute when Emma Gurule scored off a Jenna Salazar assist, putting the Skyhawks ahead 2-0.
The Grizzlies increased their offensive pressure as the second half progressed. Denali Levin put a shot on goal in the 79th minute before adding another in the 87th. Maddie Landman followed with a shot on frame just 20 seconds later, but Fort Lewis goalkeeper Trinity Lujan stopped all three attempts. Adams State added two more shots in the final two minutes but could not break through.
Adams State finished with nine shots, including three on goal, while Fort Lewis recorded 15 shots with six on frame. The Grizzlies held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and committed just two fouls compared with nine for the Skyhawks.
Levin led Adams State's attack with three shots and two shots on goal. Keyes played the opening 45 minutes and made two saves, while Jimenez played the second half and also recorded two saves.
