Join the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inaugural USA Olympic Marathon Trials, which were held on the Adams State University campus in 1968.

WHAT:
 50-Year Reunion of 1968 Olympic Marathon Trials held August 18, 1968, in Alamosa, Colorado.
WHEN: July 27-29, 2018; on July 28, the runners will participate in an 8K run that largely follows the same marathon course Alamosa set up for the 1968 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials
WHERE: Adams State University and Alamosa, Colorado.

Friday, July 27 th

Saturday, July 28 th
9:00 am Race with the Legends

Adams State will be hosting an 8K race (largely the same course as the 1968 Olympic
Marathon Trials) to commemorate the 50 th anniversary. In the summer of 1968, Adams State
and Alamosa served as host to the very first Olympic trials for the United States in the
marathon. We have received commitments from many of the ’68 marathon participants to
attend this event, including George Young, Kenny Moore, Billy Mills, Frank Shorter, Steve
Gachupin, Amby Burfoot, along with many more.

3:30 pm Tour of ASU Campus and athletic facilities
6:00 pm 50-Year Olympic Marathon Celebration Banquet • Location TBA

Cost is $50/person. Tickets must be reserved by Friday, July 20 th . Walk-ins will be based
on seating availability.

Original Marathon Program

Buddy Edelen
Buddy Edelen, a former standout marathon runner, was employed on the faculty of Adams State College as an instructor in the field of Psychology. Edelen, along with Dr. Joe I. Vigil, worked diligently from 1965 to 1968 to bring the marathon trials to Alamosa, Colorado, for its similar elevation to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico.
