Jon Atencio enters his eleventh season at the helm of the Adams State University team in 2020-21. It is his twelfth season on the coaching staff as he was an assistant coach for the program in 2013-14.
Atencio is a former Grizzly athlete and Alamosa product as he graduated from Alamosa High School where he was a three-time state qualifier where he posted second place finishes his junior and senior season and a top-ten finish at the Colorado High School Activities Association State Golf Championship his senior season.
He went on to play a single season at Trinidad State Junior College where he finished second in Region IV and led the region in scoring average.
He then went on and represented the Grizzlies where he was a top-five player his entire career (2009-12), was named team captain for two years and paced won two individual titles. He graduated from Adams State in Dec. 2012 with a BS in Business Administration.
Atencio is currently in the Professional Golf Management Program with the PGA as he was an Assistant Golf Professional for the 2013 season and has been the Head Pro at the Grizzlies home golf course, Cattails Golf Course. He is a staff professional with Taylormade Golf.
Atencio loves to camp fish, hike and partake in other outdoor recreation activities as well as spend time with his wife and high school sweetheart, Lindsey and his two daughters, Zoey and Riley.
