Samora finished the RMAC regular season with a record of 20-11 which took him to the RMAC Championships where he placed 3rd with a 3-1 record… Headed into the NCAA Championships with 23-12 record… Samora finished 8th in the NCAA Championship with a record of 2-3.
2011-12 Match-by-Match Results
2010-11 (As a Redshirt-Freshman): Qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships... Wrestled to a 4th place at the NCAA Super Regional 4/RMAC Championships... Compiled a 16-14 overall record... Went 5-3 in RMAC duals.
As a Freshman (2009-10): Redshirt season... Competed unattached at three open tournaments, placing in two of them... Wrestled at 157 pounds as one of the Grizzlies' top redshirts... Posted a combined 11-4 record... Posted a 4-1 record while placing third at the Wyoming Cowboy Open (Nov. 14)... Went 3-1 at the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open (Nov. 22) before falling out of the tournament with an injury... Placed fourth at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open (Jan. 30)... Had a 4-2 record at that tournament in Golden, Colo.
Prep: Was a state runner-up as both a junior and senior with the Montezuma-Cortez HS Panthers, coached by Cole and Griz Allison, Eric Smith and Jay Kibel… Wrestled at 152 pounds as a senior after going at 140 pounds as a junior… Placed fourth at state as a sophomore, while wrestling at 130 pounds… Was also a state qualifier as a freshman in 2005-06, when wrestling at 125 pounds… Was named as a Army National Scholar Male Athlete Award Winner in 2009… Also received the Byran Rowe Fighting Heart Award that year… Also competed in rodeo events in calf-roping, cutting and team roping competitions… Was a 2008-09 Wrangler High School Rodeo All-Star.
Academics: Is majoring in geography… Graduated from high school in 2009 with a 3.2 GPA.
Off the Mat: Born 1/7/91… Son of Rick and Melissa Applin… Sister Katelyn is 18… Brother Wyatt is 16… Enjoys roping, hunting, fishing, training horses, horse shoeing and camping… Favorite movie is Lonesome Dove… Favorite foods are beef steak and homemade tortillas.
