**2011 Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open (5th Place)**
2012-2013 (as a Junior):
Overall Record: 18-8
Ortega finished regular season with a 14-5 recorded… Leading him to the RMAC Championships where he went 3-1… Giving him the record of 17-6 when he went to the National Championships… Ortega went 1-2 in the National Championships giving him an overall record of 18-8… Named the 2013 1st team All-RMAC Wrestling team.
2011-12 Match-by-Match
2010-11 (As a Sophomore): Redshirt season... Wrestled to an 11-8 record in four tournaments, all an unattached wrestler... Won three matches at the Dec. 4 Fort Hays State Bob Smith Open... Recorded a 5th-place finish at the Rocky Mountian Collegiate Open, posting a 4-2 record at the tournament.
Before ASU: Went 15-7 at 141 pounds as a true freshman at Division I and Big Ten Conference representative Indiana… Competed unattached in four open tournaments during November and December before having his redshirt pulled to wrestle in one dual against Cleveland State (Jan. 16)… Lost that match… Started the year with a 3-2 record and a seventh place finish in the freshman/sophomore division of the Eastern Michigan Open (Nov. 7)… Went 6-1 while placing third in the same division of the Michigan State Open on Nov. 15… Went 4-1 while placing second at the Missouri Open on Nov. 22… Also competed unattached there… Went 2-2 at the Cleveland State Open (Dec. 13)… Recorded four wins by fall and three major decisions.
Prep: Became just the second wrestler in New Mexico state history to win five state titles… Started his string in 2005 as an eighth grader… Went 49-1 as a senior in 2008-09 after posting an unblemished 50-0 mark the year prior for the Rio Rancho HS Rams… Was a 5-time high school all-American… Took second place to earn all-America honors at the NHSCA Senior Nationals with a runner-up finish… Had also won his division at Junior Nationals in 2008… Was the Reno Tournament of Champions winner as a junior in 2007 before finishing second a year later… Wrestled at 140 pounds his last two years… Started his high school career at 103 pounds before moving up to 112 and 130 over the next two seasons.
Academics: Is majoring in Biology with hopes of attending medical school... earned a 3.8 GPA in high school.
Off the Mat: Born 9/1/89 to Aaron and Bridget Ortega… Brother Matt, 24, is a redshirt junior wrestler at Indiana and was 4-time high school state champion… Sister Sarah is 20… Enjoys fishing and his favorite food is steak.
