Larry Mortensen is entering his first season back with the Adams State Athletic Department, returning as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Men’s Basketball program ahead of the 2024–25 season.
Mortensen is no stranger to Adams State or the San Luis Valley. A proud alumnus, he has served the university in numerous capacities over the years—including stints as Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Athletic Director, and Associate AD. His decades-long career in college athletics has been marked by a deep commitment to student-athlete development, program growth, and leadership both on and off the court.
He previously led the Grizzlies men’s basketball program for 11 years and served as Athletic Director for 15 years. During that time, Mortensen was instrumental in expanding the department’s reach and strengthening its foundation across all sports.
In addition to his work at the collegiate level, Mortensen also made a significant impact in the high school ranks, serving as the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Centauri High School. During his time with the Falcons, he surpassed the 100-win milestone and helped establish Centauri as one of the top programs in the region. His experience at both levels brings a valuable blend of leadership and perspective to the Grizzlies’ coaching staff.
Mortensen earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Adams State. A longtime resident of Alamosa, he has remained active within the university community, teaching classes and serving as an engaged member of the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.
